Theresa Chun Obituary

Dr. Theresa Chun

Dr. Theresa Chun, former Roanoke resident, passed away on January 14, 2023, in Aliso Viejo, California, at the age of 93.

Born in South Korea on February 28, 1929, Theresa was board certified in pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She was the eldest of four children and the first in her family to graduate from a university, become a physician, and move to the United States. Theresa was exceedingly bright and dreamt of studying literature, but she chose to become a medical doctor instead. It was a profession she grew to love, and she worked until the age of 51 when chronic illness ended her career in pediatrics.

A wonderful storyteller with a sharp memory, Theresa loved sharing stories of her childhood, family, and the uncomplicated life she lived in Korea. She also spoke often of her medical work with indigenous peoples in Canada and inspired us with tales of her extensive travels.

Theresa is survived by her brothers, Young Sun (Chung Hee) and Hugo (Jin Sook); one nephew, Steven; four nieces, Ellen, Alice, Sandra and Amy; one great-nephew; and three great-nieces.

For those fortunate to know Dr. Chun, it was a joy, indeed a gift. She was my friend, and I am thankful for that. She was intellectual yet humble, quiet and unassuming, with a sweet and somewhat mischievous smile and a heart for God and people. That smile can be seen in this wonderful photograph. She had dry wit and strong opinions, softly delivered. She emanated a spirit of gratitude. She preferred being addressed by her fitting name, Theresa. Her life calls to mind the teaching of a more well-known Theresa, "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love." She was never in a hurry, always present, often without words, a lesson in mindfulness. One word describes her most; she was precious. I extend warm condolences to her family.

My dear, sweet friend Theresa, it was my pleasure and delight to call you friend. Your words were thoughtful and soft spoken. Your humor, tongue in cheek, with an impish glint in your eye was always delivered with perfect timing. Wise, witty and brilliant were you. I´d listen to your stories always amazed at the things you had accomplished and your perspective on life. Our lunches together were enjoyable but our country rides, through the back roads Catawba, were my best memory. How you enjoyed the woods, the creeks, the fields of wild flowers, the farm animals, the sun, the clouds. Every bit of nature made your heart sing. I was honored to share these events with you, learn from your wisdom, spirit of love, thoughtfulness and caring. Your memory will remain in my heart. Rest in peace dear lady.

Theresa lived on the same hall as my husband and I at the Brandon Oaks Retirement Community in Roanoke, VA. She was a dear lady. We would see her sitting in the commons area writing. We sat and talked with her many times as she shared with us that she was writing a book about her father. She also shared about her years in Korea, becoming a doctor, and coming to America. She was a very interesting conversationalist. We missed her when she moved to California. We send our sincere sympathy to her family in her passing. Lynn and Sandra Stewart

Theresa was an adult student in one or two of the night classes I taught at Salem High School when I worked there as a business teacher. She and I became very close. I visited her on a few occasions while she lived in the Salem/Roanoke area. I am sorry to hear of her passing but know she lived a good life and lived out the idea of life is about learning and continuing to grow. I´m blessed to have known her! My condolences to the family. She mentioned her nieces frequently in our conversations.
