October 10, 1939 - July 13, 2025
After a lifetime of love and devotion, Wayne E. Wheeler, 85, of Verona, Va., born in Bedford County, Va., was called home on Sunday, July 13, 2025, and is now reunited with his beloved wife, Nancy.
Wayne was preceded in death by the love of his life, Nancy Atkinson Wheeler of 62 years.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Rural and Sollie Wheeler; brothers, Liburn, Alvin, Calvin, and Luther; and grandson, Anthony Simmons.
Surviving is his son, Randy W. Wheeler (Frances); grandchildren, Derek (Michelle), Corey (Bri), and Brice Wheeler; great-grandchildren, Colton, Chloe, and Aleeyah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Wayne was a proud Iron Worker. He was a part of Iron Workers Local 28 since 1960, becoming a lifetime member. Later in his career he worked for Valley Group Inc. in Fishersville, Va. for 24 years, where he went on countless trips rigging around the United States and the World.
Wayne enjoyed hunting, gardening, and most of all piddling on his numerous projects around the house and hunting camp. He was honored to be a husband, father, "Papa", and especially a neighbor. Nevertheless, Wayne just enjoyed a good laugh.
The family wishes to thank Augusta Health, UVA, his church, friends and neighbors for their prayers, service, and care.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025, at Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Verona United Methodist Church, 406 Lee Highway, Verona, VA 24482. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.Oakeys.com.
