Gordon Herbert McKellar Sr.
SOUTHERN PINES — Gordon Herbert McKellar Sr., 90, of Southern Pines, passed away peacefully on Jan. 16, 2016, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Gordon was born on Dec. 19, 1925, in Robeson County to the late Luther Bishop and Mary Belle Wiggins McKellar.
Gordon proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a plank owner, having served on the first crew of the USS Hank (DD 702). The Hank supported the invasion of Iwo Jima and covered for the Okinawa invasion. The ship experienced kamikaze attacks on many occasions and Gordon was a member of a five-inch gun team that warded them off and protected the fleet behind them. He received a bronze star for the battle of Okinawa, Victory WWII medal, Philippine Liberation (2 star) medal and Asiatic Pacific Area (4 stars).
Gordon was a member of First Baptist Church in Southern Pines since 1968. He was a devoted, loving and Christian husband and father and a very witty, fun-loving man. He loved to deep sea fish and some of his happiest days were spent on his boat off the coast of Wrightsville Beach, with his son Gordon Jr.
In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by Gordon H. McKellar Jr.; three sisters, Louise Kearns, Gertrude McKellar and Flora Belle McNeill; and two brothers, James and Howard McKellar.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Peggy Ann Roberts McKellar; a daughter, Karen McKellar Manning (Craig) of Whispering Pines; a brother, Robert McKellar of Charlotte; and two grandchildren, Stephen Manning of Raleigh and Nicole Manning of Whispering Pines.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Southern Pines. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs.
