John Jr, who I met in 1967 when we were doing civil rights work for the Lumbee, and registering voters, was a wonderful man. He was a model of strength for his people and his family, of good humor, and of giving decency. I will miss him, my dear friend, greatly. And I send my condolences to his dear wife and special children, who all took good care of him in his long illnesses and his special needs.
Goodbye with love, dear Pope
