KATHRYN HAYES CALVERT
LUMBERTON — Kathryn Hayes Calvert, 92, of Lumberton, died on Friday evening, Jan. 27, 2023, surrounded by her family.
She was a resident of Wesley Pines Retirement Community. Kathryn was born in Lumberton on March 12, 1930, to the late Furman amd Lydia Hester Hayes.
She was a graduate of Lumberton High School and attended Campbell College for music. She lived in Orrum for many years and was a devoted member of Mt. Elim Baptist Church. After moving back to Lumberton, she met and married the love of her life, Heyward Calvert, a dedicated, loving husband of 33 years.
Kathryn retired from Westpoint Pepperell after many years, but the main focus of her life was her home and family, her Christian life and volunteer church work, and caring for others.
Since childhood, Kathryn loved to sing and was known for her beautiful soprano voice. She sang in her church choirs and was often invited to sing for special occasions. She always sang with joy. Kathryn was passionate about keeping a beautiful home and entertaining. She enjoyed exploring new recipes, visiting friends and family and tending loved ones. She had a sweet tooth and was always eager to make someone a favorite pie or cake or host a picnic with homemade ice cream. She gave tirelessly of herself and was well known for her kindness and her hearty, joy-filled laughter.
In addition to her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death by her sisters, Corinne Henderson, Elizabeth Young, Hester Tyson and Laura Floyd; and her brothers: Floyd Hayes, A.C. Hayes, and Bobby Hayes.
She is survived by her husband, Heyward Calvert; her two daughters, Barbara McKenzie-Tervo of Beaufort, and Julie McKenzie Jones of Greenville, and their spouses, Jay Tervo and Steve Jones; three grandchildren, Ashley Ware of Atlanta, Georgia, Benton Jones and wife, Allison, of Raleigh, and Caroline Tervo of Durham; as well as a stepson, Burton Calvert and wife, Karen, of Colorado, and stepdaughter, Kay Mead and husband, Glenn, of Florida; and their children, Thomas Calvert and wife, Jennifer, Allison Petersen and husband, Chris, and Kimberly Ragan and husband, Trevor.
Kathryn loved her five great-grandsons and her wonderful host of nieces and nephews living around the country. She was joyfully anticipating the arrival of two new great-grandsons in February. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. A.C. "Dot" Hayes of Fayetteville.
The family will receive visitors prior to the memorial service on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, from 11 a.m. to noon at Chestnut Street Methodist Church, 200 E. Eighth St. in Lumberton. Kathryn was a very special friend and neighbor, and took us under her wing as soon as we moved across the street. She watched over us as we did her. We miss her and think of her often. Our only wish was that we had spent more time with her. Now she´s with her sisters and singing and dancing with Jesus! God bless and prayers to her wonderful, loving family! Kathryn we will think of you lovingly and know are safe and healthy in heaven!
