Ellen Bennefeld Obituary

Ellen Conklin Bennefeld, affectionately known as Ellie, a long-time resident of Charlottesville, passed away in Bridgewater, Virginia, at the age of 72. Born on January 26, 1953, in Lyons, New York, Ellie lived a life marked by compassion, humor, and fierce love for those around her. A dedicated registered nurse at the University of Virginia Hospital, Ellie committed herself to the care and well-being of others with skill and heart. Her career was a reflection of her nature - nurturing, strong, and endlessly generous. Ellie's warmth extended to her family and many close friends. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Claire Leeper (Shannon), and grandsons William and Thomas Leeper, who were the light of her life. She also leaves behind her sisters Amy Pettigrew of Naples, Florida, and Clara Crockatt of Norwich, England; as well as her cherished friends Leigh Kloss and Sylvia McKay (and the "Blueberry Hill Family"). Ellie was preceded in death by her husband Lester Bennefeld and parents Charles and Mildred Conklin. Ellie was a woman of sass, epic one-liners, and unwavering love. She was a fierce advocate who embraced her passions wholeheartedly. Whether tending to her koi ponds and gardens, doting on her cats, or sharing laughter with her neighbors on Crestmont, Ellie lived with joy and authenticity. In earlier years, she delighted in traveling the world with her daughter, dedicating time to creating memories that spanned continents. Ellie's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew her - through every story shared, every laugh remembered, and every life she touched. If you wish to celebrate Ellie's life together, please join us at Bridgewater Retirement Center, Oasis Room, 302 N. Second St., Bridgewater, VA 22812, on Friday, August 1, 2025, from 2-4 pm. Ellie always had a twinkle in her eye and a smile or something funny to say. Tell Les and Tom hello for some of us, and hugs all around!

Ellie was a kind, compassionate person. We both had a nursing background and worked together in the 1980s. She was very proud of her daughter. I am glad to hear that they were able to travel the world together. She will be missed.
