Barbara Slocum Obituary

Barbara Jeanne Trapp Slocum passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, where she was joyfully reunited with her loving parents Robert and Florence Trapp, her sister Kathy, and her young brother Robert Jr. She was deeply loved by her spouse Tom, her children Mike, Jeff and David, her daughters in law Betsy, Kathleen, and Christy, her eight grandchildren Hannah, Abigail, Jacob, Olivia, Charlotte, Crosby, Emma and Rebekah, and her devoted sisters Kathy, Marilyn, Margie and Rosie.

Barbara was born on March 20, 1945, in Ithaca, New York. The tragic death of her young brother introduced her parents to a life of faith. They continued to lead Barbara and her four sisters in their faith, resulting in a legacy that will last for many generations. In her high school years, she played the saxophone in the Ithaca High School band. She was the first member of her family to attend college at SUNY Albany where she studied Mathematics. It was there she met the love of her life, Tom. They married the same weekend as their graduation and celebrated 57 years of marriage in June with a cruise to Europe.

Prior to becoming a mother, Barbara worked as a computer programmer. To those that knew her well, she was first and foremost a daughter of the King. She spent her mornings deep in the word of God, focused on prayer and meditation for her family and friends. She attended many Bible studies over the years and was known for her strong knowledge of Jesus and the Bible. Coming from a needy family of her own, she knew the value of compassion and generosity to others. She gave of her time volunteering in Awana, serving at the Roswell library, and then at the Thrift Center in Marietta. She sacrificed deeply in many situations to personally love on friends and family in needy circumstances. She genuinely displayed the love of Christ through her very natural ability to care and serve.

Barbara was a very creative and intelligent person. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, Sudoku, cross stitch, genealogy and reading. There was always a newspaper on the counter, with her Wall Street Journal crossword puzzle partially finished. She didn't mind contributions from others, including her growing grandchildren. She often printed Sudoku puzzles as a means of competition for Tom, David and herself. She always won. Her lifelong love of cross stitch led her to spend time in the "Stitch and Chat" group hosted by the Spires retirement community. Family members from a distance fondly remember her home cooked meals and loving hospitality. But her most cherished time was spent in the company of her grandchildren playing games, baking cookies, or doing puzzles. Her legacy of faith, service and love for others will live on in our hearts.

The visitation will take place at the First Presbyterian Church of Rome in the historic sanctuary, on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm.

The Funeral Service will be held in the same location at 2:00pm, with Dr. Jonathan Schwartz officiating. Interment will follow at Eastview Cemetery, at 905 Kingston Ave. in Rome.

Floral arrangements will be provided by Bussey's of Rome. "Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Equipping Leaders International (www.equipleaders.org) or Compassion International (www.compassion.com)"

Tom and family,
We are deeply saddened by Barbara’s passing from our presence on earth, but grateful for her heavenly reunion with her Savior and family. Getting to know her in small group gave us a glimpse of her faith and love of family. We pray her legacy will influence others for generations to come. We regret that we will miss the memorial service due to being out of town, but we will be praying for all of you. Much love, Hall and Debbie Rogers
