James Williams Obituary

James Gerald "Jim" Williams passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, surrounded by his loving daughters and wife after a long illness. Jim Lived his last years to the fullest, never giving in to numerous health challenges. He had a positive attitude and kind spirit until the very end.

Jim was born at Crawford-Long hospital in Atlanta, GA, on January 17, 1949, to the late Betty Crymes and Gerald Williams. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Jack, and father-in-law, Ralph. Jim is survived by his wife, Norma, daughter, Kellie (Mike) Hardy of Pace, Fl, daughter, Jamie (Matt) Brynteson of Cedartown, the mother of his children, Tere Williams also of Cedartown, and his precious grandchildren, Reed, Judd, and Piper. Jim is also survived by sisters, Cindy (Stan) Collins, and Cathy Kyle, along with nephews and nieces, Chris (Renee), Phillip (Caitlin), Hunter, Trent (Olivia), Allison (Andy), and Ainsley (Rob); numerous great nieces and nephews and cousins, Elaine (Joey) LaMoy, Patsie (Don) Bargeron, and Ernie Williams. Jim also leaves behind his beloved mother-in-law, Alice, and his constant companion, Scout.

Jim grew up in the Atlanta area, graduating from Clarkston High School in 1967. He came to Rome and proudly became a Berry Viking, earning a bachelor's degree in history and physical education. Jim began working at the Rome-Floyd YMCA in 1972 as a lifeguard. His career spanned over three decades. He held many titles, from Aquatics Director, Camp Director, Program Director, Associate Executive, to the Executive Director. Jim credited the late Jerry Bryant for mentoring him and fostering the mission and principles of the YMCA. He oversaw many projects over the years which included starting the first YBL program and soccer leagues in the area, bringing the "War of the Stars" BMX race to Rome, and the construction of Grizzard Park. Jim was always grateful for the generous donations, volunteers, community support and the wonderful staff that made the YMCA a success.

In retirement, Jim was able to continue working with young people by coaching men's and woman's basketball, and women's volleyball at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. He was very fond of the players and coaches that he met, and the memories created on and off the court.

Baseball played a huge role in Jim's life. He recalled fond memories as a child of watching the Atlanta Crackers play at Ponce de Leon Park. His dream came true when the city of Atlanta got a major league team. He became a lifelong Braves fan, having attended the first and last games at Fulton County Stadium, Turner Field, and the first game at Truist Park. Another dream that he realized was bringing a minor league team to Rome. Jim worked with many avid baseball fans, including his good friend Randy Davis, to accomplish that goal. He was a twenty-one year season ticket holder and never missed an opening day of the Rome Braves.

Jim had many hobbies including playing senior league baseball into his forties and playing volleyball for Edward Sales into his fifties. He loved NASCAR (until the rules got too complicated) making many trips to Talladega with his "Hill Gang" buddies. Jim loved to travel with family and friends, especially to his favorite place Key West. Jim loved to fish, eat oysters, and play golf. He was an avid classic rock fan, attending many concerts. The Eagles and The Rolling Stones were his favorite bands. Jim was always a proud FSU fan even when everyone wanted to play them for homecoming. Thanks to the generosity of local business owners, he and his family were fortunate to create unforgettable memories while attending many sporting events and concerts.

Jim was a life-long parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved being on the "sauce team" and helping the youth free throw contest until failing health prevented his participation.

The family would like to thank Dr. Joe Vaughn for his wonderful care and support through the years. A special thanks goes out to our second church family, Second Avenue Methodist, for the many meals, flowers, cards, prayers, and support during our times of need. The family would also like to thank Amedisys Home Health, Right at Home, and Heyman Hospice for the excellent care Jim received. Also, special gratitude goes out to Jim's caregivers, Jonathan and Shirley, and to his trainer, Britt. We were blessed by you all.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 10:30am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 911 North Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161, with Father Paul Porter presiding and Deacon Stuart Neslin assisting.

Jimmy, as I called him when we were growing up, was my best friend and we did everything together. We didn't even know on each others doors, we just walked in the house. We were like brothers. Norma, if you read this I have pictures of us in Army uniforms as children. We would fight WWII all over again. I miss him dearly and wish I had found him earlier. We were like brothers. My love and condolences to you and the family. You can reach me at 762-525-0052. Call or text me.
