Ann Summa Obituary

1933 - 2025

A Life Well Lived

Mary Ann Summa, 91, of Rome, passed away, on Saturday, June 14, 2025, in Rome Health, with her loving family by her side.

She was born on July 26, 1933, in Rome, NY, daughter of the late Donato and Carmela Pace Summa. She was the youngest of all her siblings who predeceased her, Grace, Leonard and Dominick. Mary Ann was a graduate of Rome Free Academy.

Mary Ann's family called her "The Matriarch". This title has been passed on to her niece, Kris Quail. She was an amazing woman with a strong Christian faith and excelled at whatever she put her mind to. Being active in sports, since the age of eight, she became a bat girl for the Rome Colonels, which was a minor league baseball team. In 1968, Mary Ann was inducted into the Rome Woman's Bowling Club as one of Rome's all time bowling greats. She shattered the 600 mark, over 100 times, in bowling leagues. In 1987, Mary Ann was inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame. She was a crack bowler, better than average golfer and outstanding tennis player.

Mary Ann also played piano, trumpet and participated in many musicals and talent shows.

Several years ago, she started Rome Teachers Credit Union while employed as a secretary at Strough School. In 2012, Mary Ann was named "Zonta Woman of the Year" for her numerous devotion to many community organizations such as Dollars for Scholars, enabling 1,500 students to continue their education. The Floyd United Methodist Church benefited from the grants Mary Ann wrote for a new roof, windows, carpet, seating and sound system.

Mary Ann traveled to Europe with her best friend, of 52 years, Jackie Tompkins. They visited the birthplace of Mary's parents in Filiano, Italy, as well as traveling in Austria and Germany. Mary Ann and Jackie traveled extensively throughout the United States, including Las Vegas and California. She and Jackie were snowbirds and spent many winters in Fort Pierce, FL, where they learned pickleball. They also enjoyed camping at White Lake, NY, for boating, jet skiing and picnics.

She was very close to her family and friends, enjoying all family events. Mary Ann was always in attendance for holidays, cookouts, graduations and weddings.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews, Jeanine (Michael - deceased) Weaver and family, Kristine (Lauren) Summa Quail and family, Linda Jo Summa Hunt and family, Donna (Gene) Summa Kelly and family, Carl (Christy) Weaver and family, best friend, Jackie Tompkins; several close friends; and Finn, the cat, who adopted Mary Ann.

She was predeceased by her brothers; and a nephew, Michael Weaver.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 10:30 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating. Family and friends may call at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 7751 Merrick Rd., Rome, on Thursday, June 19, 2025, from 4-6 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

With the passing of Mary Ann, that generation of two great families are gone. My Grandmother, Carmella Summa Glasso and her brother, Donato Summa traveled from Filiano to Rome, NY around 1912 to join my Grandfather, Vito Glasso. Those branches of the Summa and Glasso families have produced generations of hard-working industrious members of society. Our Grandparents would be proud of their legacy.

Mary Ann was a valued member of the Board of Directors of the Rome Sports Hall of Fame for many years. Her advice was important to our success over the years. She will be greatly missed by all of us. May she rest in eternal peace
