Dolores Smith Obituary

Dolores Gibbons Smith, 90, of Cassville, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025, in her home with her loving family by her side.

She was born on July 2, 1935, the youngest daughter of James and Mary Electa Rehm Gibbons. She was a graduate of Waterville High School before she met and married Roderick C. Smith on July 5, 1958, at St. Bernard's Church, Waterville. Dolores and Roderick settled down and raised their family in Cassville, where they remained married for 67 years and watched their family grow with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dolores was a member of the Cassville Fire Department Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society.

She worked in a variety of job roles spreading her humor and expertise to those she crossed paths with. Some of her jobs included Utica National Insurance Company, Oneida County Soil and Water Conservation District, Fay's Drugs, Lloyds Pharmacy in West Winfield and ended her working career, as a school food service worker, at Sauquoit Valley High School. Between the many occupational roles, Dolores was a caregiver for her mother and mother-in-law through their illnesses, along with caring and babysitting for her loving grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Roderick Smith; their three children, Debbie (Kevin) Mumpton, of Sauquoit, Kenny (Donna) Smith, of Sauquoit and Karen (Steve) Cleary, of Waterville; six grandchildren, Danielle (Justin) Kress, Ryan (Kate) Schreck, Ashley Smith, Breanna Mumpton (fiancé, Alden Huxtable), Kaelee and Janelle Cleary; and her four great-grandchildren, Hailie and Adelynn Kress and Ryalyn and Beau Schreck. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elaine (Charlie) Gaiser; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

She was predeceased by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Beverly Gibbons; father-in-law, Kenneth Smith; mother-in-law and step-father-in-law, Ruth and Robert Dye; brother-in-law, Roger Bartlett; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gerald and Carol Smith; and her niece and husband, Brenda and Charlie Mahaffy.

The family would like to extend their deepest heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all of the caregivers for their dedicated time, kindness and care that supported Dolores during her final years, Edna McConnell, Flo Polley, Donna Williams, Lori Macon, Rosie Stoltzfus Yoder, Mary Stoltzfus and all the hospice nurses that aided all of us during this difficult time.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 27 from 5-7 p.m., at Smith Funeral Home, Sauquoit. The following morning, at 9:30 a.m., a small service will be held at the funeral home, with Rev. Thomas Servatius officiating, followed by burial in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Waterville, with Dolores' closest friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Hospice & Palliative care "AIM" or St. Bernard's Cemetery.
