Gilbert Scharf Obituary

Gilbert F. Scharf, 93, a lifelong resident of Utica, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at the Masonic Care Community.

Born on May 27, 1930, in Utica, he was the son of the late Frank and Agnes (Bockardt) Scharf.

Gilbert was a graduate of UFA and also attended Utica College.

A United States Army veteran, Gilbert served during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953.

On June 8, 1957, Gilbert married Marguerite Valeriano in St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. They were blessed with eight children and enjoyed a loving marriage of 62 years until her death on March 15, 2020.

Gilbert's lifelong profession was as a financial advisor, beginning his career at Bache, and retiring in 1992 from Shearson Lehman Bros.

He treasured time spent wintering in Naples, FL, where he and Marguerite had many friends and good times.

Surviving are his children, Frank (Ellen) Scharf, New Hartford, Valerie Jones, Ballston Lake, Linda Scharf (Bruce Harned), North Carolina, David (Christina) Scharf, Florida/New Hartford, John (Amy) Scharf, Glenmont, Daniel (Rená) Scharf, Utica, Thomas (Sue) Scharf, North Carolina and Jeffrey Scharf (Nicole Merry), Deerfield; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard Scharf (Linda Jack), Gerald (Joan) Scharf, Lawrence (Kathleen) Scharf; sisters-in-law, Jean Arcusa, Louise Valeriano, Marian Valeriano, Ellen Valeriano; brother-in-law, Richard (Kathleen) Valeriano; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his wife, Marguerite, Gilbert was predeceased by his brother, Roger; brothers-in-law, Paul Arcusa, Anthony Valeriano, Joseph Valeriano, Frank Valeriano and Alfred Valeriano; sisters-in-law, Sandra (Valeriano) Corridori and Shirley Valeriano.

In keeping with the family's wishes, funeral services will be private. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Christ Our Savior Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Gilbert's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. (Online at www.stjude.org)

The Scharf family extends their gratitude to the staff at the Masonic Care Community.

He was a pleasure to care for, loved his wife and family. He would often talk about his brother Roger, and how much his missed his wife. I´ll miss you, Gilbie!
