Gloria Jean Sardina, loving wife, doting mother, grandmother and true friend passed away peacefully October 12 in the comfort of her own home with her three children by her side, joining the love of her life, Douglas Sardina, in Heaven.
Gloria (79) was born in Utica on June 12, 1946, the second of Ann Misiazek's three children. She grew up on Schuyler Street in West Utica with her mom, older sister, Sandy, and younger brother, Larry. Gloria graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1964. During a local dance she met the love of her life, Douglas Sardina. The beautiful couple married on Sept. 11, 1965 and lived in Utica until settling in Whitesboro in 1971 where they raised three children together.
After graduating from UFA, Gloria worked several jobs before spending the last 25 years of her career as a nurse's aid at Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center.
During retirement, Gloria enjoyed the simple things in life. She kept busy by visiting family, taking long walks, shopping for deals, watching movies and shows and socializing with her closest friends Betty, Julie, Shirley, Sue, Eleanor and Kathy.
Gloria cherished attending sporting events, dance recitals, plays or any event in which her grandchildren participated. She also loved spending time with her sister and the entire McConeghy family, who always made her laugh and kept her smiling through both good and bad times.
Gloria is survived by her three children Nick Sardina (Felicia) of Whitesboro. Melissa Totten (Brian) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Paul Sardina of Clearwater, Florida. Her four grandchildren, Jessica Allen (Dylan), Nicholas, KK and Mackenzie, sister, Sandy, and several nieces and nephews.
She's predeceased by her beautiful mother, Ann, her brother Larry, and her forever love, Doug.
Being a devout Catholic, and guided by her faith helped shape Gloria into an extremely humble and kind woman. That belief also allowed her to remain strong as she navigated her way through life's toughest obstacles, including her relentless final battle.
She wasn't a Christian merely by name, she also lived it. Her generosity to numerous charities, sponsoring needy children throughout the world, as well as her overall need to always look to help the less fortunate was what she believed every person should strive toward.
Gloria and her family want to give special thanks to family friends, Kathy and Paul Smyth, for going above and beyond over the last few months. Also, a huge thanks to the workers at Hospice of Oneida County, who are true living angels on earth. We're also thankful for the visiting nurses program and the nursing staff on the eighth floor of Wynn Hospital.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday October 17th at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Rosary Campus, 1736 Burrstone Road in New Hartford. Interment (for immediate family only) will follow at Cavalry Cemetery.
