Howard Lewis Ramsdale Jr., affectionately known as "Howie," passed away peacefully in his hometown of Rome, NY, on June 8, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on January 10, 1944, Howard was the son of Grace and Howard Ramsdale, Sr., and brother to Ronald Ramsdale and Gail Ramsdale, all predeceased. Howie was a devoted partner, father, brother, and friend, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A veteran, Howie proudly served his country honorably as a U.S. Army medical records specialist from 1964 to 1967, stationed in Orléans, France. His exemplary military service was recognized with a National Defense Service Medal and multiple commendations highlighting his exceptional administrative skills, initiative, and devotion to duty, traits that he carried throughout his life.
Following his military service, Howard began his career as a psychiatric technician at Marcy Psychiatric Center. An artist and craftsman at heart, Howard studied commercial art at Mohawk Valley Community College. This education facilitated his shift in role to a sign painter at Utica Psychiatric Center where he became a pioneer in implementing digital technologies in sign engraving. Through his strong work ethic and attention to detail, he was promoted to a leadership role within the maintenance department, supervising a team of employees and ensuring efficient operations. Because of his hard work and dedication, he was able to retire early at the age of 55.
Howard married his soul mate, Lois Trophia, on November 20, 1970, at St. Peter's Church, in Rome, NY. They built a loving home and welcomed their daughter, Heather, on November 29, 1973. A man of routine and unparalleled detail, he took great pride in caring for his home and enjoyed designing and renovating spaces with a meticulous touch. Sadly, Lois preceded Howard in death. Later in life, Howard found love and companionship with his partner, Shirley Ketchum.
Howie was a man defined by dedication, routine, and a love for family and friends. He exhibited an intricate architectural mindset in everything he did. A true outdoorsman, Howie was passionate about fishing, hunting, and respecting nature. He captained countless boat rides, teaching his youngest family members how to fish, and provided a gift of unforgettable experiences to so many. His happiest moments were spent boating and fishing on the St.
Lawrence River, preparing meals from his catch, and sharing evenings with friends, martini in hand as the sun set over the water. His passion for music and incredible dance skills accompanied his lively spirit and infectious personality.
Howard leaves behind his devoted daughter Heather Ramsdale, son-in-law Jaime Treadwell, grandson Baxter Treadwell, and beloved partner Shirley Ketchum.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects to Howard's life at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Wednesday, June 18, from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. Military honors will be held at 3:20pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Rome, NY, Inc., honoring Howie's love for nature and all living things.
