Michael Bosak Obituary

WHITELAW. . .

Michael J. Bosak, 69, of 8676 N. Main Street, Canastota, passed away unexpectedly, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at his home, that he was so proud to have designed, following a brief illness.

He was born on November 1, 1955, in Utica, the son of the late Charles and Helen (Dymon) Bosak.

Mike lived in the Utica area most of his life, and was a 1973 graduate of Notre Dame High School. He graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College in 1985. Mike later graduated from SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Buffalo, earning a Master's Degree in Architecture.

He worked at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome for many years, and later worked for USDA Rural Development in Syracuse and Marcy for twenty years, retiring in 2020.

Mike was involved with the Landmark Society of Greater Utica for over thirty years, as a past President, current Vice-President, and member. He loved volunteering, and was involved in local organizations including the Great Swamp Conservancy, the Canal Town Museum, and the Whitelaw Presbyterian Church Old Home Days. Mike was a model train enthusiast, and was a former board member of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad and the Mohawk Valley National Railway Historical Society.

He was very involved with, and supportive of his immediate family and grandchildren. Mike was always at their events, and was there whenever something was needed. He loved spending time with them.

Mike married Penny S. Taber on April 24, 2009, in North Utica. They shared a loving and inseparable marriage that stood as a testament to true devotion.

Surviving beside his wife, Penny, are: his immediate family who he loved very much, Adam Froelick of Canastota, Calvin and Alex Froelick of Canastota, Stephanie and Kevin Lent of E. Syracuse, and Shelley and Errick Selmon of Canastota; one sister, Christine and Mark Leogrande of New Hartford; twelve grandchildren, Khylena, Ella, Adam, Rockko, Leighton, Reagan, Cooper, Deacon, Luccah, Carsenn, Everleigh, and Ivey; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Taber of Clinton, Melissa Taber and Doug Tuttle of N. Carolina, and Rosemary Aubeuf of Canastota; one niece and three nephews, Natalie Hawes, Christian Leogrande, Jordan Leogrande, and David Tuttle; and many cousins. Mike was pre-deceased by one daughter, Stephanie Bosak; one niece, Alaina Tuttle; and two brothers-in-law, Lance Taber, and Frank Aubeuf.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. A funeral mass will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, November 7, 2025, at St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota. The Rev. Christopher Ballard, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Whitelaw Cemetery. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Landmark Society of Greater Utica, 1124 State Street, Utica, NY 13502, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Dear Penny,
I remember growing up Uncle Earl and Aunt Jo were very fond of you and you and Mary Jo were close....Although I never had the privilege of knowing your husband from what I have heard and read he was a remarkable man.....May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Sending prayers and thoughts of loving memories to all.
Sincerely,

I have known Mike for a good long time and we were both members of the Utica and Mohawk Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. I enjoyed programs he would put on about different railroad stations that are still standing or no longer standing. He coordinated our trolley night every year in which I participated in by bringing all kinds of items pertaining to trolleys and electric railroading. My thoughts and prayers are with his family right now and he will be missed by everyone in the Utica and Mohawk Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.

As a fellow architect deeply committed to the preservation of our historic resources Mike and I interacted many times in many ways over many years as colleagues and as good friends. With his works he made our world a better place and he will be sorely missed. Condolences to Penny and the entire family that Mike loved.

Penny and family,
I´m sorry to hear of Mike´s passing. He was always so supportive when working on development projects at Rural Development. His smile and positive attitude will always be remembered. Every time I pass by St. Mary´s church in Oneonta I remember him describing the addition to the church as one of his first projects he worked on after getting his architect degree. He left his mark on the world!

I was fortunate to see Mike inducted last year into the Oneida County History Center hall of fame. He also wrote the forward to my book on Old Main. He was a great ambassador for all the historic buildings in our area.
