West Leyden - Warren Henry Mathis passed away, peacefully at home, on September 15, 2025.
Born to Otto and Florentine Kapfer Mathis on July 30, 1933, Warren was one of eleven siblings raised on Mathis Road in Fish Creek, NY. He attended Sunset Corners Schoolhouse, graduating from West Leyden Central School in 1952. Warren was a three sport athlete, outstanding agricultural student and excelled at public speaking. In 1958, Warren was united in marriage with Eleanor A. Walker of Camden, NY. The couple settled in West Leyden.
An avid outdoorsman, Warren hunted, fished and trapped. He especially enjoyed his hunting trips to Montana, Colorado and Alabama. Warren was a skilled logger by profession and operated Mathis Still Chain Saw Sales and Service for over 50 years.
In coordination with the NYS DEC, Warren was instrumental in the re-introduction of the Northeastern Fischer to the Adirondacks. He was involved in many Tug Hill dendrology studies, the study of Giardia in mammals, specifically the beaver, as well as forest management on the Tug Hill Plateau.
Warren was a valued board member of the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust. His knowledge of "the woods" was invaluable. He was a teacher to many, always stressing the importance of the land and proper forest management. Warren served as chairman of the Region 6 Forest Practice Board, a delegate to the Fish and Wildlife Board and was the recipient of the Tug Hill Sage Award. In 2010, he was honored as the NYS Woodsmen's Field Days Grand Parade Marshal.
Warren was an active member of the West Leyden Community. He coached Little League, Babe Ruth Baseball and was a longtime member of the Volunteer Fire Department. Warren was the coach of three Little League Championship Teams and a District 37 Little League Allstar Championship.
Warren is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of 67 years; son, Rick; daughter-in- law, Mary Katherine; and three grandchildren, Luna, Fiona and Bowie. Also surviving are three sisters, Marjory Schaller, Linda (Duane) Wallace and Joyce (Robert) Parkhurst; two brothers, John Mathis and Rodney (Holly) Mathis; and many special nieces and nephews.
Warren was predeceased by sisters, Norma Plopper, Virginia Kemme and Marilyn Reigler; and brothers, Donald Mathis and James Mathis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 11 a.m., from St. Mary's Nativity Church, West Leyden. There are no calling hours, however, Warren's family will greet guests at the conclusion of Mass.
