Dixie Carlson Obituary

DIXIE MAE CARLSON, 79 ROCKFORD - Dixie Mae Carlson, 79, was ushered into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, as her family sang hymns at her side. Born in Rockford on May 23, 1934, to Axel and Ellen (Sanders) Appelquist. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage and enjoyed her collection of Swedish keepsakes. Dixie graduated from Rockford East High School in 1952, and continued to stay in touch with many of her high school girlfriends. She was employed as a bookkeeper/secretary for much of her life. A member of Rockford First where she met and then married the love of her life, Glenn Carlson, in 1980. She was involved in many church activities including choir and the Seniors' group, and participated in mission trips to Pennsylvania, Germany, and Argentina. Dixie will always be remembered for her "rice pudding ministry" with which she comforted so many friends. In the past 2 years, she enjoyed activities and making new friends at Healing Pathways. She is survived by her husband, Glenn; children, JoEllen (John) Gianoli, Barbara (Tom) Schwindaman, Jim (Lisa) Strang, Carol (Marc) Gillies and Betty Westlake; grandchildren, Jill (Matt) Christensen, Kelly (Kleber) de Souza, Samantha Rose Strang, Dustin Burns, Aaron Nicely and Sarah Barclay; great-grandchildren, Kenneth and Kirstin Christensen and Kyle, Katie and Kobe de Souza; and brother, Richard Appelquist. Predeceased by brothers, Harold and Leonard Appelquist; sisters, Elvera Shippy, Jane Flood and Margery Appelquist (infant); and grandchildren, Amy Rose Strang and Heather Dawn Nicely (infant). Funeral Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 23, 2013, with a visitation from 10 a.m. until service time in the Rockford First Church Auditorium, 5950 Spring Creek Rd., Rockford. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Rockford Rescue Mission, Rockford Area Pregnancy Care Center (RAPCC) and Healing Pathways Cancer Resource Center. Burial in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Dear Glenn, JoEllen & John and families,
I am so sorry to just read of Dixie's passing. Glen, you and Dixie were one of my favorites to see and work with during my times in the offices at Rockford First; and always a joy to see you at church anytime get those great hugs and words of encouragement. I am so sorry for your your loss. Dixie will be missed by many whom she touched with her great smile and love. My prayers are going up for that peace that passes all understanding.

So sorry for the loss of Dixie. I so enjoyed talking with her at church. She and Glenn were one of the first people who greeted us and remembered us when we returned after 25 yrs gone from Rockford First for pastoral ministry. Loved our 1980s music dept.
