DONALD J. HERBERT, 85 ROCKFORD - Donald J. Herbert, 85, of Rockford, died peacefully on March 2, 2015, in his home with his wife by his side. Born October 4, 1929, in Rockford. He graduated from East High School. He married his loving true soul mate; Doris Danielson on January 28, 1956, their life together was one of hard work, family, friends and the joy of traveling around the world. Don told many stories of the wonders they had seen. Climbing the Great Wall of China, an African Safari, and the Australian Outback. Don worked at Woodward Governor for 34 years, something he was truly proud of. Don was a lifetime member of 3 L Club. Don was deeply loved by all his grandchildren; a sweet kind giving Grandpa who never wanted to take credit for the good deeds he did. Grandpa or "Pa" will forever be missed. His 4 children could not be more proud of the life he gave us and our mom. Donald is survived by his wife, Doris of Rockford; children, Jan (Dan) Edwards of Rockford, Jeff (Luz) of Colorado Springs, CO, Jay (Michelle) of Loveland, CO, and Jim (Patty) Herbert of Rockford; grandchildren, Corey (Stephanie) Edwards of Rockford, Chelsea (Justin) Leatherby of Rockford, Larina (Jessie) Aslunce of Boulder, CO, Kendra (Neil) Marks of Colorado Springs, CO, Julie (Sean) Mallory of Commerce, CO, Sara Herbert of Ft. Collins, CO, Erin (Shawn) Lamb, Emily Herbert, and Ethan Herbert, all of Rockford; great-grandchildren, Nolan Marks of Colorado Springs, CO and Fiona Malloy of Commerce, CO. He was predeceased in death by his parents; two sisters; and brother. The family would like to give a special thank you to Heartland Hospice for all the love they gave Don. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., with Rev. Jane McChesney officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 1:45 p.m. before the service.
