John E. Carlson 1935—2016
John E. Carlson, 81, of Rockford, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016. He was born October 17, 1934, in Rockford; the son of Walter and Florence (Johnson) Carlson. John was a 1952 East High School graduate and from Augustana College in 1956. He served in the United States Army Reserves. John married Marsha Johnson on September 7, 1963. John was owner of John Carlson's Menswear. He is survived by his wife, Marsha; children, Cindy (Jeff) Uhrig of Cherry Valley, IL, Carrie (James Floback) Cappa of Franklin Park, IL and Brad (Theresa) Carlson of Loves Park, IL; grandchildren, Austin (Kali) and Mandy Uhrig, Nicholas and Natalie Cappa, Emma and John Carlson.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2016, in St. Mark Lutheran Church, 675 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford, with Rev. Dr. Mark Hagan officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, October 3, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, prior to the service in the church. Our deepest sympathy for the family in your loss of John. Those of us who had the chance to know him were truly blessed. He had special sparkle in his eyes that always made people feel happy as he smiled at them. His willingness to help so many in emergency times with the best quality suits was at the very least admirable. We had four generations of his generous service in his store. What a kind, gracious and generous man. I've always admired him. When my Grandfather passed away and my husband at the time needed a suit coat at the last minute, he was kind enough to open the store. His smile always twinkled in his eyes. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

John was one of the all-time good guys. Way back when, I went thru confirmation at St Mark and John and Marsha were with us all the way. They were selfless and tireless in helping our confirmation class thru the learning process.

I had known John from well before then as my dad Lawrence was a regular at his menswear store. I followed in my dad's footsteps as a customer.

I never knew John to have a bad day. He was the most cheerful and encouraging person I knew.

I wish his entire family my condolences and know that John is still smiling, just from Heaven.
