Tom and Jan,

My daughter Julie was a friend, mainly at school. I am her father. She loved him very much and I am sure that you will be missing him. I think I met him once, but Julie spoke highly of him and his accomplishments.

The world is permanently a darker place but he would want us all to still find light in things. I'm deeply sorry and can't even fathom the pain you are feeling. You two, Tom and Jan, brought an overly wonderful person into this world and for that I could never thank you enough.

We only met Michael once when he came to visit our grandson, Alex Peterson. (We live in Peoria, but visit our family in Rockford.) Alex considered Michael his best friend, and is terribly sad. There is no greater loss than that of a child. We hope you will remember all of the good times and those memories will help to heal your loss. With love and compassion, Judith (Peterson) Shanahan
