Valentino DeCastris Obituary

VALENTINO E. DECASTRIS 'VAL EDDY', 88 ROCKFORD - Valentino E. DeCastris "Val Eddy" 88 of Rockford died August 4, 2014. He was born at home in south Rockford on July 3, 1926 to Orlando and Amalia (Ludovici) DeCastris, immigrants from Ferentino, Italy, Rockford's Sister City. Orlando, a leader in Rockford's Italian community died when Val was 16. Amalia didn't speak, read or write English, nor drive, so Val became man of the family early. Strongly family and faith-oriented, he graduated with West High School's first class of 1944. A self-taught professional musician for over 70 years, he first performed at age 12. As a child, he repaired a broken mandolin, inspired by hearing one played by neighbor Gabriel Giorgi (Zeke Giorgi's father). He was a WWII veteran performing with the Army's Dance and Marching bands. He married Arthur Murray dance instructor Patricia Macaluso in 1949, who was largely responsible for his success, traveling nationally with him, chronicling his career. A consummate entertainer, he played the bass, mandolin and banjo. A vocalist, band leader and music instructor, he was happiest playing music, a "musician's musician." Performed regionally, nationally and internationally with notables Boyd Raeburn, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Del Courtney, Bob Vincent, Louie Armstrong, Lawrence Welk, Les Brown, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Danny Thomas, Jack Benny, and Martha Raye. He and Rockford pianist extraordinaire Homer Carlson were the Val Eddy Duo for 50 years, recording for MCA. Dave Pitts (Lamond) joined them in the 1950's as the Val Eddy Trio, performing live nightly on WTVO's "The Song Shop." Val's bands had extended engagements at the Town Lounge, Times Lounge, Red Garter, Carriage House, Cart, Faust, Stockholm Inn, Riveria Ballroom, Manor, Gun Club, Stan Hack's, Brandywine, Chicago hotels and resorts. He was beloved by all, his many fans following him through the years and miles. He knew thousands of songs and remembered everyone's favorites. Val preferred progressive jazz and felt jazz was America's world legacy. Received Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rockford Area Music Industry organization, Special Recognition from the Greater Rockford Italian American Association and Illinois State House Resolution. Father of the Year at Ethnic Heritage Museum and recipient with Homer Carlson of Rockford's Sesquicentennial Medal for "outstanding artistic contributions to the city". Survivors are daughter Valeri DeCastris; son-in-law David Beccue; sister Mary Zandonatti; brother-in-law Jimmy Capicotte; nieces, nephews, cousins here and in Italy and ex-wife Marian. Predeceased by first wife Pat, her twin Connie and brother-in-law Richard Zandonatti. Thanks to Lincolnshire Place, Hospice of America and VA. Visitation 5 to 9 p.m. August 13, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 South Mulford. Mass at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church August 14 with visitation 10 to 11 am. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Val DeCastris c/o 918 Cunningham Street, Rockford, IL 61102 to fund music scholarships for underprivileged youth. Condolences at www.fitzgeraldfh.com.

Hi Dad. How's Heaven? Heavenly, I am sure! I hope that you aren't mad that I used your photos from the 1940s in the newspapers. Reporters from throughout the Midwest - Quad Cities, Beloit and central Illinois are doing stories on you. I know that you would be embarrassed. Sorry, but I so admired your talent and ability to connect with your audiences and fans. Your story is a classic American immigrant's success story and should be celebrated. You made it on your own against all odds, with Mom nudging you along. How IS Mom and everyone? Blissful, I am sure. I bet it's good to see your father since you lost him at such an early age. I imagine he is happy with your career choice now and is glad that you didn't listen to his advice to become a government employee. He surely sees that you had the talent to succeed in an insecure profession. I hope Nona is happy with what Dave and I have done with her house. We treasure it and are going to stay here. I know that you never understood that, even at the end, but this house is so full of the family's spirit and we love it. I have such fond memories of all the friends and family that passed by here on Cunningham Street and stopped it to talk or for holidays. I felt like the world walked by here. Since you left, it's been so busy down here! Our cousins are your pallbearers, from both sides of the family. Our friends are singing for your Mass. All the guys are playing for your wake – for four hours! And a special meal is going to be served…Italian of course. Sound ok? I'm new to this so I hope that you are pleased with your send-off. There's been all kind of scheduling conflicts with everybody and I know that people were wondering if I was ever going to get you buried. Everyone is calling and I have no time to talk to anyone. People really loved you! The outpouring has been incredible. I have been trying to comfort the callers, apologizing for telling them this sad news. To be continued....

Part 2...You have so much history...I am killing myself trying to put it all together. I am doing the best I can and I hope that you are happy with the arrangements I am making for you. Dave is helping some too but I really needed to clone myself this week. I never told you, but I had some health scares and lots of medical tests this week, but they came out good, so don't worry. We have been cleaning out your apartment too. Everything is under control. No worries for you anymore! Enjoy eternity and God's presence…we'll be there too someday and it will be divine. Dave and I helped God keep you alive as long as we could and we hope that we did the best for you in all ways. We certainly worked hard at it and were so honored to do so. Those five months that you lived with us in your childhood home were sweet and I know that you liked your new apartment and the care that you received there. We all can't believe that you are gone. How thoughtful of you to wait until the day after Festa Italiana, knowing that Dave and I were responsible for so many volunteers that weekend. You used to stroll those grounds with your mandolin and play those romantic Italian songs. How we will miss that! But, I am so grateful that Mom chronicled your career so well, with souvenirs, match books, diaries, playbills, menus and photos. And we are left with these wonderful CDs and tapes. I have enough for a museum. I can't even easily choose the pictures for your funeral, you performed with so many people in so many places. You had a great run and you “did it your way” indeed. Well, until I see you again, where God's perfection will finally grant me some talent so that I actually learn to play my favorite instrument, the mandolin, at your side…keep the music playing. Tell God we love Him and tell Mom that life has never been the same since she left us in 1979 and that there hasn't been a day when I haven't thought of her and missed her. But don't let her get sad about that. I know that we'll all be together again someday. I hope that you liked the suit and casket and visitation and Mass. Two good friends sang at the Mass and it was just beautiful. Dave videotaped the wake - I got so many nice comments on it. We just found a video of you playing mandolin at my house in November 2013 that we hadn't seen yet. Love it! The food was great for your funeral too - lasagna, your favorite, plus more of course. I have a lot of work ahead of me and I hope that I handle it all for you properly. Rest in peace, Papa! Keep the music playing...
