Harry Carroll Obituary

GRANVILLE, N.Y. -- Harry Joseph Carroll, 80, died May 18, 2011.

He was born Sept. 14, 1930, the son of Jerry and Margaret Carroll of Granville.

He graduated from Granville High School in 1948. He earned a B.A. in history at SUNY Binghamton and a master's degree in social studies at Harpur College in Endicott. He also attended the Freedom Foundation in 1979 in Valley Forge, St. Francis College, Loretto, Pa.

In earlier years, Mr. Carroll worked for Telescope in Granville as a lumber inspector. He later taught social studies in Granville Central School District for over 35 years, where he was chairman of the history department, retiring in 1990. He was also employed by the state of New York as a civilian teacher at Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps assigned to the 328th Communications Recon Co. during the Korean conflict. He received the Army of Occupation Medal Germany.

He was a post commander of the VFW, member of the American Legion, a past member of the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and a founding member of the Granville Rescue Squad.

Mr. Carroll was an avid Civil War historian.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Barbara Bogucki Carroll; five children, Patricia Hunt, Timothy Carroll, both of Granville, Margaret "Peggy" Little of Cosayuna Lake, Barbara Denis of Tupper Lake, and Kathleen Byrne of Mendon, Mass.; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four sisters, Mary Field, Marguerite Bascom, Irene Norton, Winifred Smith, and a brother, James.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 23 Bulkley Ave., Granville, at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, with the Rev. Thomas Zelker presiding. Burial will follow in Our Lake of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Middle Granville.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 20, at the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harry J. Carroll Memorial Award at the Granville High School, an award to be presented to a deserving GHS graduate.
