Dear Mrs. Flory and Family,
I was shocked to hear about the sudden and unexpected passing of Joe. I have know him for 14 years in my capacity as an Admissions Counselor at Clarkson and the last 10 years at St. Lawrence University. I am at lose for words on what Joe meant as a professional counselor, mentor and friend. I will always remember Joe for his sense of humor, dedication to his kids and the counseling profession and friendship. The Office of Admissions and my wife Sue and I want to offer you our most deepest sympathy and know that he will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mrs. Flory and Family,
My daughter Libby (a senior at RHS) and I were deeply saddened to learn of Joe's sudden passing. For the past several years we had come to know him quite well, as he worked tirelessly to guide us through the daunting process of getting Libby into college. No matter how high his piles of paperwork, he would sweep everything aside and focus all his attention on us as if nothing else mattered. He truly cared about the kids in his fold and it showed in everything he did, from that bottomless bowl of candy to the thoughtful advice he gave each and every student. Thanks to his good work, the garden he tended so lovingly will continue to flourish for generations to come.

God bless you and your family.
We are all a little poorer today, and heaven a little richer.

Peg and Family,
Joe was a remarkable gentleman, educator, colleague, and friend. Rutland High School is sadly depleted by the absence of his quiet and generous spirit, but the Rutland community at large is forever enriched for having had him among us. He was always the same, always kind, and always ready to help those who needed help most. It was an honor to know him. If everyone could be assured of a reward like Joe's for a life well lived, heaven would be a happy place indeed. May God bless and comfort you at this very sad time.

To Peg, and the Flory family:
Joe touched all of us in so many incredibly important ways with his amazing compassion, kindness, tenderness, and love.
I will never forget all the Christmas gifts piled high on his MSJ classroom desk back in the 70's, as we all marveled at the fact that the students loved him so much, while none of the rest of us seemed to receive any! And how he reached so gently to all students, regardless of their name, and how he was always such a strong advocate for those who needed our care and love the most. That's why I recruited him to Rutland High in the 90's, where a whole school, an entire region, and thousands of current students and graduates over many decades were so fortunate to have crossed his path, and who remain in mourning for a man who loved the underdog, changed lives and improved our world.

Flory Family,
I was sad to hear of Mr. Flory's passing. I had the privilege of having Mr. Flory as my guidance counselor at RHS. Whenever he saw me he told me to make an appointment to sit down and chat with him. He was always interested in how his students were doing, even after graduation. I never had to sweat a thing because he was always looking out for me the way I'm sure he is looking out for you guys now. There is no doubt he had an impact on where I am now and I am very happy to have known him. I wish you guys the best.

MRS. PEG FLORY AND FAMILY,
OUR HEARTS REACH OUT TO YOU ALL IN THE SHOCK AND SORROW OF LOSING YOUR PAPA JOE. WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT WE HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING ALL OF YOU PERSONALLY IN GATLINBURG. JOE'S CHARM AND FRIENDLINESS WERE IMPRESSIVE AS HE JOINED A FEW OF US FOR BREADFAST. HE REINFORCED THE GOOD IMPRESSIONS THAT PEG GAVE US IN A FIRST VISIT AND LUNCH AT ADRIAN'S HOUSE IN OAK RIDGE. IN THE MONTHS SINCE MIKE AND ADRIAN MADE HIS TITLE "GRANDSONINLAW", WE HAVE RECOGNIZED IN MIKE MORE AND MORE OF THE ADMIRABLE VALUES AND ATTITUDES SHARED BY HIS FLORY FAMILY! WE URGE YOU EACH TO CONCENTRATE ON ALL THE POWERFUL GOOD MEMORIES OF THE WONDERFUL INCIDENTS AND BLESSINGS OF THE PAST. TEARS ARE A PART OF LIFE THAT HEALS AND HELPS US TO RECOVER BOTH PEACE AND JOY, THANKS TO GOD!
WITH LOVE,

Our prayers and condolences go out to you, your sons, and Joe's family. Only time will heal your sadness, but the wonderful memories you have will live on forever.

The morning after Joe passed away was the most somber I have experienced RHS in my three years here. Two particular young ladies were very upset. I spoke with them about how much Joe had truly guided them both, in the past two years. One of the girls then shared that her mother was very upset too. Joe was her mother's Guidance counselor also, and had kept in touch through the years. Joe was even at this student's 5th birthday party! Joe was student centered because he had a big heart and truly cared. I hope I can always be reminded of his example when dealing with students who need help.

Dear Peg and family,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Joe. He was truly a wonderful man and a great friend to all in my family. I will miss our walks and talks in the meadow with the dogs (Jack and Spanky) when I would come up to visit the great north. One memory I will hold fondly is last year at my parent’s anniversary party the fun we all had and the centerpieces that were on the tables. (Both dogs left there markings on the geraniums. Joe was really upset at Jack. I hosed off the plants and continue on making them the centerpieces for the tables at the party. All night long Joe couldn’t keep a straight face when he saw me at the party. Once the party was over we shared the story with my folks and we all laughed and laughed.) Now when I see geraniums I will always think of Joe and that memory. I can state for a fact Joe will be truly missed by me.

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I would stop into see my mother in the Guidance Office and he would always be smiling and happy to hear whatever was going on in my life. Although I never had Joe as a counselor I could tell the presence he had on other student's lives. Of course, we would always talk Red Sox 12 months a year. I can honestly say I've never met a more genuinely nice and caring person than Joe Flory. I bet he is talking Red Sox with Teddy Ballgame as we speak. You will be missed.

My condolences to you Mrs Flory & to his family for your loss. I knew "Poppa Joe" as we called him during my HS years at MSJ in 1971-75. Many mornings in the last few years I'd be getting coffee at Irving's as he would be before heading to RHS. We would chat of our yrs at MSJ & how times & students have changed. Lately he helped me with my daughter,& me accepting her early Graduation. I felt she should just go the last half of the year instead of being out, but as he explained to me, the times have changed so much since we were in school that it's probably for he best. Just have her get her groundwork for college done early so it won't be a hassle later on. He was great with kids, they & the rest of us that have known Poppa Joe will also. May he Rest in Peace & God bless you all.
