Mark Skakel Obituary

RUTLAND TOWN - Mark Richard Skakel, 56, of Rutland Town, died suddenly on March 27, 2010, doing what he loved – working in the woods.

He was born on September 17, 1953, in Greenwich, Connecticut, the son of the late George and Patricia (Corroon) Skakel. After his parents died in 1966, he and his siblings were raised by their late aunt and uncle, Nancy and Dick Corroon.

Mr. Skakel graduated from Paul Smith College with an A.A.S. in forestry and the University of Vermont with a B.S. in forestry. He was working towards his M.S. in education at the University of Vermont.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Sangster Skakel, and his beloved daughters and stepson, Katherine Kipp Skakel, Eliza Prescott Skakel and Will Crofoot. He is also survived by a brother, George Skakel, and sisters, Susan Rand and Kathleen Williams, as well as Nancy and Dick Corroon's daughters, Polly Rattner and Ellen Petersen, who were like sisters to Mark.

He spent the last decade as a teacher of forestry and natural resources at Stafford Technical Center, where he found his true calling as a hands-on educator who touched the lives of hundreds of students. Prior to that, he spent 23 years as a consulting forester.

From young adulthood, Mr. Skakel was a community leader in the best sense of the term, devoting much of his time and talents to volunteer service. He was vice chair of the Rutland County Democratic Committee, and an avid and active campaigner for numerous local and statewide candidates. He was recently invited to join the board of the Nature Conservancy of Vermont. Previously, he served as a long-time selectman for the town of Wallingford, and was also a selectman in Shrewsbury.

Mr. Skakel served many years on the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board. He was president of the board of the Chaffee Art Center the first year it opened with year-round exhibits.

Mr. Skakel was a man of far-reaching and eclectic enthusiasms, which he generously shared with his wide circle of friends. He was a beekeeper, a spirited creator and collector of art, an avid gardener, and known for his love of pyrotechnics and his collection of burls and various bone artifacts. As a young man, he became an expert falconer and piloted his own small airplane. He was a kayaker and hiker who was happiest outdoors, and who last summer backpacked a good part of the Long Trail.

He was a wide-ranging reader and also a fine writer; over the past months, he wrote a monthly article for an environmental series published in the Sunday Times-Argus/Rutland Herald.

Among Mr. Skakel's most memorable qualities were his joie de vivre and his wry sense of humor, both of which lightened the load of those working with him on whatever task he was involved with.

A celebration of Mr. Skakel's life will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mark Skakel Forestry Scholarship at Stafford Technical Center.

I remember Mark fondly as a good person who was thoroughly likeable, and a good friend. Our lives went in different directions after school, but I have very strong, positive memories of our friendship. I'm sorry to be learning only now of his death, which was all too soon. Richard Kiger

We knew Mark as a man of conviction and fairnes. He always seemed to have this charismatic smile, words of encouragement and an awareness for those less fortunate. This was evident in his outspoken support of equality for all Vermonters, including gays. He truly was Rutland County's oak, its paragon.

Jane and family,

As I've talked with friends in Rutland this past week, I'm struck by the lasting influence of Mark's energy, passion and commitment, and caring. I hope the enormous loss of his passing is tempered for you by the legacy he's left in this community. I often pick up the burl he gave me when I was designing your gardens and think of his smile and enthusiasm. My thoughts are with you.

April 13, 2010

Sail on my friend, wait for the rest of us, and warm the fire! You treated those of us who loved you with kindness and smiles of laughter although from afar so very long ago! Thank you for being in my life! You measured up to be one of life's treasures in knowing a true friend! May God protect your blessed children and family through this passage! You left indelible pawprints in the sand as you sailed on and away!

Please accept my deepest condolensces. I got to know Mark when I was a student and he put me to work painting his house in Watch Hill RI. I knew him as a generous and kind man. He certainly made an impression on me that I have never forgotten. Sadly, I was never able to repay his kindness. My thoughts are with you in this sad time.

I cannot believe I won't be seeing Mark again - at a Democratic fund-raiser or an arts activity, whatever paths. Mark has been such a long-time part of my life in so many ways, and I'll so miss his wit, good humor, twinkly eyes, and deep compassion for others. When Katherine was in my horse 4-H group, Mark was one of the few fathers that hung around to watch the lessons at the Spring Riding Clinic. And we talked of our roots in Greenwich CT. And when in Wallingford, Mark had such a positive influence on our town as a Selectman. I am thinking of you Jane, and the children, in this very dark hour. Take solace in the fact that Mark's life was so valuable to so many, and his was a life lived as he so chose, true to his loves and beliefs.

Just trying to pull it together these past few days has been so hard for me and I cannot imagine how hard it must be for Jane and the kids. Again all I can say is that I am SOOOOO sorry and that I hope that you know that I am here if you need something. Mark was not only a co-worker but one of my best friends. He was so dedicated to making other people happy and such a hard worker. As some others have said it will be hard for another teacher to fill his shoes. He and his students have volunteered so many hours for the Conservation District to help put conservation projects on the ground I have to say that I couldn't have done it without him. As the Conservation District Manager I know that I have to continue down the path with Mark's Students to implement the projects that he had planned as I know that this is what he would want and as a friend I am going to give myself time to grieve. He will never be forgotten. RIP Mark...

A smile, a joke, an offer to work together were all part of Mark's persona as we taught together at Stafford. It was a great opportunity to share in the making of wreaths or planting of bulbs with the preschool and Human Services students.
Excitement reigned. It is an honor to have known Mark. He'll always be a part of us. Love and Blessings to you, Jane, and to the family. Lee Forte

What a loss for us all! Mark's presence within the Hyde community was a force that will not easily be replaced. He helped me to grow and to feel good about myself through the toughest of times. He understood and related and shared, and took me to task...gently... when needed. He was a mentor and leader who was also humble enough to take direction and accept criticism. He was my friend and advocate, there for me with his unconditional love and support. His boyish grin and infectious laugh was legendary! And he made me smile when I didn't feel like it.
It will be difficult to say goodbye...

I am very saddened to hear of Mark's death. I've known him for almost 25 years from our days in Wallingford. We continued to see each other a few times a year when he would bring his students to high school conservation education activities I was involved in, such as the Vermont Envirothon and Vermont High School Soil and Land Judging Contests. He always seemed to have a great rapport with his students and you could see the respect and caring went both ways. I am sorry for the loss his students are feeling, and of course for his family and their loss. Please know many share in your loss and send our sincerest condolonces.

In shock coming across the brief announcement in the Herald, I turned to the web rather than both Jane or others.
Mark was as dear as he was vital. To be with Jane and him was always a treat. One that I counted on in continuity. These messages, especially the loving ones from his students, mark the measure of Mark, the great hole of our loss, and how it will be filled by keeping his spirit with us.

First I would like to give you my deepest sympathy and then I would like to tell you how Mr. Skakel touched our lives. Our son Matthew attended Mr. Skakel's Forrestry class in 2004 & 2005 Matthew hated school before starting Forrestry then it all changed and he couldn't wait to get to school to see what they were doing that day, clearing brush, building a house, using chainsaws, hatching fish or even driving the bulldozer which was one of Matt's favorite days since he got the bulldozer stuck in the mud. After Matt graduated from High School he still stayed in touch with Mr. Skakel visiting him on occasion this past October Matt moving out of state before leaving he said had to go and say goodbye to Mr. Skakel his friend. Thank you for guiding our son Mr. Skakel you did a GREAT JOB.
