Ann, Chuck's death made me realize that time does not stand still--years roll by with no contact, but memories remain alive. Thanks to you and Chuck, Doug and I were able to pay for college. The summer jobs at the A&W were our financial mainstay. Thank you and Chuck for many good memories--you and he are thanked many, many times. Take care of yourself, Ann, and again thank you both. Dear Ann and Family
When I learned of "chucks" passing from my brother (gary) I was truly at a loss for words, but through the next few days I started thinking back to the days of the old A&W. I think I was only 13 or 14 when I had the "pleasure" of his loving screams. How i would hold the glass by the rim and place it on the tray and he would nicely say "you know, they have a handle for a reason....)or my fondest memory of the time I just did not want to go to work because I wanted to hang out with my friends. So I called and told charles that my mother wanted me to quit and I could no longer work for him. Well, that did not sit too well and he called my mother and she said that this was not at all the truth. So chuck got in his car, and to this day i have no idea how he found me and politely told me I was going back to work.
I will never forget the lessons that he taught me about life and work ethics. I am going to go in and make a rootbeer float from one of my last mugs and have a toast to you my friend....You will be missed

Ann, Amy, and Mark I am so sorry for your loss. I worked at Jensens from my sophmore year through high school and i don't know how many more years. Started out as a counter person and worked my way up to waitressing. Chuck was a boss i will never forget, he taught me from a young age what it was like to work hard and be responsible. Although there were times that were rough, he'd always tell you good job at the end of the day. It will be hard to go in to the restaurant and not see him doing something whether it was working or eating dinner. You will be Greatly missed Chuck!!! My thoughts and prayers are with the Jensen family

I have great memories of the years I spent working for Chuck, starting when I was just 14 and Chuck referring to me as the "Baby". I learned many valuable lessons working for Chuck and will forever be grateful. I have taken my children back to Jensen's and proudly told them that is where Mommy's first job was.

Ann, Mark, Amy - I am so sorry for your loss.

Ann,Mark, and Amy, It was 1973 that I started working at A&W with chuckles and craig and the rest of the group, we worked hard and we played hard. I learned how to juggle lots in life with my early beginnings that chuck taught all of us so well, I will always have a special place in my heart for those 4yrs and for all the great friends I made. Until we meet again chuck, save me a super pappa burger and a ice cold rootbeer float. Ann Allen Herko, Burlington, VT

Ann,Mark,Amy: As the last of the Allen family who also "trained" under the watchful eye of Mr Jensen ... "Chuck"... I too learned the measure of a hard days work. I never really did master the art of making change from that darned apron however !! Going in after the end of a shift was the terror of my night.. Was I going to make any money?? Did I count right? Will I ever get this change thing? Eventually Chuck showed me to take my time.. count it out... and I would end up with some leftover at the end of a shift....Some of my best skills were started there and I have carried them with me today.. I can still see the kitchen and the pass thru window ... While my brothers were in the Old A/W, I was lucky enough to be at Jensens... the New and Fancy Place, but the same old rules.. and the same old Chuck and Ann.... the kids were just small...and Chuck and Ann young and crazy... What a Ride !!!! I saw Chuck for a long time after, biking on The Vineyard..... with the same determination as flipping a burger or frying chicken... never half done... No way........ He will never be gone.... or forgotten ... and nobody will ever be able to make a Big Beef Burger like Him !! My Best to the Entire Family........

Ann, Mark & Amy,
It was the Summer of 1964 when a gangly, young and inexperienced kid from Gage Street was taken under the wings of an upstart , young entrepeneur with a passion for "doing it right". He called me a "soda jerk", and although at the time I though the name a little irreverent, the names my friends would later call me such as "Wash-a-gallon-Allen", have become an endearing part of those formidable years at The A&W. To this day, I attribute my overall work ethic, to the solid foundation laid by a man who I have called "friend" for all those years since. Chuck once told me that "If there wasn't enough time to do it right, there certainly wasn't time to do it over", a philosophy of sorts taken with me through my life and passed on in measure to my children and now my grandchildren. I will never forget those early years with Chuck, Ann, Richard and the never ending array of carhops and "jerks", many of which were sent "packing" up the railroad tracks back home! Chuck was the toughest, yet most fair "boss" that I have ever worked for and I find it impossible to express to you all what an important part of my life he became. I will miss him deeply and am saddened to think that all who had the pleasure of knowing him will somehow find that little piece of themselves gone, but certainly not forgotten. Not only has Bennington lost one of it's truly great citizens, but the world has lost a truly great man. My heartfelt condolences go out, especially to you Ann, Mark and Amy, but also to all of those who were fortunate enough to be part of the A&W family. May my friend Chuck rest in eternal peace, until we all meet again.
Saddened beyond words,
The Gary Allen family.

My thoughts and prayers to the Jensen's. My memories of A&W will be with me for my entire life. To the man who made me the type of Manager I am today. He wasn't afraid to tell you when you were wrong or give you Hug and pat on the back when you did well. He truly cared for everyone that worked for him. He will be deeply missed, but the memories will never be forgotten. To this day, 28 years later I can recite the rootbeer recipe in my sleep!
