Alvin JAMES Obituary
JAMES, Alvin Louis ''Big Al''
Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Nephew, and Cousin passed away peacefully on June 4, 2010. He was preceded in death by his son Darvin James, parents Ernest and Evelyn James, and siblings Lawrence and Carolyn James. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed being a Minister, Deputy Chaplain, and member of numerous organizations. He graduated from CSU Sacramento in 1980 with a B.S. in Finance, and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years of service and SMUD after 21 years of employment. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Deloris James; children Raymona James, Raymond James (wife Cheryle), Sharmaine James, and Shauntele James; and, grandchildren Paris James and Milan James. Devoted siblings Ernest James, Irma Varnado, Vermon James (wife Avis), Thelma Martin, Evelyn James, Thomas James (wife LaVerne), Leon James (wife Gloria), and Aunt Edna Brown. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues. Visitation will be from 3 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, and from 9 - 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Thompson Rose Chapel, 3601 5th Ave., Sacramento, Calif. The Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at Oak Park United Methodist Church, 3600 Broadway, Sacramento, Calif. The Repass will follow immediately after the Memorial Service. Donations can be made to Oak Park United Methodist Church, in lieu of flowers.

I am so saddened by the passing of our friend in the High Tech Center lab at California State University - Sacramento. When he would enter the room, it would "light up!" When I would ask him how he was doing he would always remark, "Well, I'm still kicking!" I am in disbelief that he is gone but so grateful that I had the pleasure and honor to get to know him and gain so much wisdom from him. He was a mentor and role model to the younger students. Please accept my sympathy. . .I so looked forward to seeing him return in the fall semester.

What a terrible loss that this is. Al was always happy and laughing. He never knew a stranger. He might forget a name, but he never forgot a face. He was a kind and wonderful person. My deepest sympathy to his family.

"Pops" was a very valuable influence in my life, a true gentlemen. I will never forget, at such an impressionable age, the numerous times he took Ray and I golfing and the laughs and lessons he shared with us both. Thank-you Pops' you will be sorely missed by those you touched and by the loved ones you left behind.

He always had a way of making the lost feel welcome. I especially enjoyed watching him put the cane down and cut a rug at Conference in Reno. He will be missed by all of us who lives he touched. God loves it when we are happy and Al made us happy.

Al James was one of a kind - a true Southern gentleman. He was kind and funny and engaged with anyone and everyone he met. I knew him both through Toastmasters and the Capitolaires (where he sang with my father). For three years we took the Toastmasters program into Folsom Prison. He was a fabulous role model for the inmates, who had a great deal of respect for him. Our troubled world will miss the grace and light he brought to this life. Safe travels, dear friend!

Al was always serving. In the military, at SMUD, w/Toastmasters, as a Chaplain & many other things I am sure. He was always a gentleman and always wanted to help.

Al was a special man with a very special heart. You could always count on him to stop you in the hallway (SMUD) and share a story of two or just offer a suggestion to make life better for employee's at work. His wonderful personality and charming smile will surely be missed. May God bless the family in this hour of grief. I am confident he is stopping everyone in heaven...still smiling and giving advice.

My deepest sympathy to Al's family. A big man with an even bigger heart. I would hope to run into him at the chiro office and usually I did. He was always so positive and kind. My sympathy to the family of a wonderful man. He put smiles on every ones faces. I loved it when he came in to our chiropractic office and he would always bring us some wisdom. Every Monday afternoon like clock work he would come in and put a smile on my face and he would joke with me. I will miss him and everything he has done to make everyone life a little happier. He is a angle looking done at us making sure he is taking care of each and everyone of us.
