Alvin Soohoo Obituary

SOOHOO, Alvin Lim
Son, brother, friend, left us at 1:00 AM on Friday, January 5, 2007, surrounded by his family after two years battling melanoma. Alvin was born in San Francisco Chinatown on Feb. 29, 1951, to Cantonese immigrants, Warren You Lim SooHoo, Hoi Ping, and Ellen Chan Kwai Gee SooHoo, Toisan. In Sacramento, Alvin grew up in the family's restaurant business where he cooked with the pleasure of giving. His infectious smile greeted customers at the SooHoo restaurants - Tea Cup Cafe (21st & L), Ming Palace, Ming Tree, Chinois East-West, Chinois City Cafe. When he wasn't cooking or baking his famous cheesecakes, Alvin was an avid runner and bicyclist. With good humor and the occasional wrong turn that runners behind him followed, a competitive Alvin completed marathons, biathlons and triathlons. Alvin's excellent health was no match for his disease. In excruciating pain, his kind smile graced his face. Nurses competed for space in a room crowded with family and friends. Alvin is remembered as the caring son of his ill mother, family diplomat, generous and devoted friend, survived by brothers Terry, David and Nelson; cousins Gilbert, Tom, Herbert and Howard Lee; sisters-in-law Sai-Ling Mao, Elaine Corn; nephews Blaine, Robert; nieces Ashley, Jacqueline, Samantha. East Lawn Mortuary 5757 Greenback will hold a public gathering from 4:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, Jan. 10, and funeral at 10:00 AM on Thursday, Jan. 11. In Alvin's honor, Chinois City Cafe will be closed for the day, Thursday, Jan. 11.

My sincere condolences go to all Alvin’s family, friends, and restaurant patrons. The two primary memories I have of Alvin are that he would do anything for anyone; he was a selfless, giving person. He helped me out on many different occasions. The second one being it was always fun when Alvin was around. Alvin was always upbeat, positive, and funny. You were guaranteed a good time when Alvin was present.
