Anna BATES Obituary

BATES, Anna Helen
Feb. 27, 1920 - Feb. 5, 2014
Anna Helen Bates passed away February 5, 2014 at the age of 93 in Citrus Heights, California. Beloved mother and aunt ('Annie Annie'), she was born in Spokane, Washington in February 1920 to immigrant parents (Charles Brailo from Croatia and Sophia Yliranta from Finland) and moved to Los Angeles at a young age. Following graduation from George Washington High School, she immediately went to work to help support her mother and sister during the Depression years. She married William F. Bates, and resided in Arcadia, California where she focused on raising her daughter, being a homemaker, and participating in community activities. After divorcing, she moved to Laguna Niguel, California where she enjoyed many wonderful years viewing sunsets over Catalina Island. She was an active member of the Laguna Niguel Senior Citizens Club, where she served on the board and was instrumental in the planning and development of the Sea Country Senior and Community Center. She was proud of her Finnish heritage, and her travels to Finland to visit her mother's village of Kaukonen were among the most cherished memories of her life. In 2011, she moved to Citrus Heights to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, and continued to enjoy playing bridge and spending time with family and new friends.

Survived by daughter Janet Bates (Philip Salzman), sister Jean Sullivan, nieces Kathleen Sullivan, Patricia Sullivan, and Joanne Sullivan. She will be forever loved, mourned, and missed. Services will be private.

Donations may be made in Anna's name to the Laguna Niguel Senior Citizen's Club or Age Well Senior Services, both at 24602 Aliso Creek Road, Laguna Niguel, CA 92677.

Growing up I spent many summer days playing with my cousin Janet in her swimming pool. We spent hours pretending to be secret agents like the Man from U.N.C.L.E. or making designer fashions out of beach towels and pool toys and walking like models. Our own Project Runway. All the time my Aunt kept an eye on us through her kitchen window never interrupting what must have been quite a sight. Years later we discussed those days. She said she got some pretty good laughs watching us and that those were some of her favorite memories. Same here. Thank you Annie Annie.

I am sending my thoughts and memories of the warmth, kindness and thoughtfulness of all my interactions with Annie Annie. It brings back an exciting era in my life of change and new belonging to your greater family, Janet. She played a part in that which became dear to me. She had enough of those Yliranta/Brailo traits (I am not saying which ones!) that I found lovable and fascinating. My heart goes out as well to Jean as she has lost her only sister and that has got to be a blow. But her longevity is a statement of its own of her sense of connection and caring. I also hope you and Phil are well and hangin' in there. My love to you both.

Dear Janet and Phil, I remember your Mom and our first college visit to your home in LA (visit to Disneyland 4/73) and eating home made Beef Burgundy and later years in Laguna. I remember discussing the fact that we were both Pisces and loved to walk on the beach. She was a grand lady and lived a long wonderful life. May you both have wonderful memories of your times together. Jenny P.

I will always love and miss my dear Aunt
Anna. She loved music, from Neil Diamond
to Broadway musicals. With her we Kids saw the Beatles in 1965 at Dodger Stadium. Just one fond memory.
