Anthony Mathios Obituary

Anthony Mathios
April 26, 1939 - November 16, 2022
Tucson, Arizona - Anthony "Tony" James Mathios was born in San Francisco, California on April 26, 1939. He attended Lowell High School and was a proud member of the class of 1956. Tony studied at University of California, Berkeley and Davis and graduated in 1965 from George Washington University School of Medicine. Tony served as a physician in the US Air Force and as faculty at the University of California, San Francisco. Tony settled in Sacramento where he and his wife, Pamela Kimball raised their four children Peter, Nicole, Alexis, and Michael. Tony worked as a pathologist, eventually co-founding his own practice, Outpatient Pathology Associates.
In 2003, Tony married Pat McNulty Lyons. In retirement, Tony and Pat divided their time between Tucson and San Francisco. They had the opportunity to travel to a variety of destinations, including Tony's first trip to Greece, which inspired Tony to apply for his Greek dual citizenship. Tony and Pat also enjoyed spending time in New Zealand where Tony owned a vineyard.
Born and raised in San Francisco, Tony was an avid Giants and 49ers fan and he always held out hope that the Cal Bears would make it back to the Rose Bowl. Tony also loved spending time with his dogs Parker, Maxwell, and Higgins. Additionally, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and continually impressed his children with his knowledge and passion for plumbing.
On November 16, 2022, Tony passed peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona from complications with cancer. Tony is preceded in death by his parents James and Catherine, wife Pamela, and son Anthony Jeffrey. He is survived by his wife Pat, children Peter, Nicole, Alexis, Michael, stepchildren Sean, Clare, brother Angelo, grandchildren Olivia, Simon, Dominic, Francesca, Catherine, Annabelle, James, and Gretchen.
Private funeral and burial services will be held at Greek Orthodox Memorial Park in Colma, California on November 29, 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Tony's name to the UCSF Division of Hematology and Oncology (makeagift.ucsf.edu designate: Other - Hematology/Oncology Discretionary Fund).

Tony was a good friend at Grattan School, the Boy Scouts, and at Lowell. I'll always remember his joy playing football - his favorite play on Junior Varsity was the first play of each game: Mathios deep! It often tricked the other team, and sometimes resulted in a touchdown! Rest easy, friend.
