Anthony Van Rees Obituary

Anthony (Tony) Lawrence Van Rees, husband, father, Chef, and man of a thousand smiles passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015 at the age of 47. Born December 10, 1967 in Montebello, California to Rosalie and Carroll Van Rees, Tony spent his childhood years in Sacramento and New Jersey with his brother John, eventually moving back to Sacramento to stay in 1980. Tony attended Rio Americano High School and the University of California Santa Barbara, graduating with a degree in Sociology in 1991. It was during this time that his true passion, cooking, began to coalesce through several culinary jobs. Upon graduation from UCSB, Tony moved to San Francisco and entered the renowned California Culinary Academy where he was formally trained in the classical culinary arts. Working at some of the top restaurants in the Bay Area, Tony challenged paradigms and pushed the boundaries of every culinary experience possible, specializing in training as a Pastry Chef. Tony met his wife, Amy Taylor, in 1993, married in 1995, and moved to Seattle to start Little Rae's Bakery: a wholesale distribution company serving restaurants, coffee shops, hotels and businesses throughout the Puget Sound. Tony's innovative recipes and an unmatched work ethic grew the business until 2000 when he sold the bakery and returned to Sacramento. In 2002, Tony, along with lifelong friend Erik Finnerty, launched FatCat Scones, now FatCat Bakery, an all natural wholesale artisan bakery serving retail businesses, hotels, resorts and school districts nationwide. To everyone who knew him, Tony was the most giving, loving, cheerful, brilliant friend and mentor possible. He was a renowned and influential instructor at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Sacramento, a dedicated Soccer Coach and Board Member with BAC Soccer Club, an ardent Swim Team and Water Polo supporter for his daughters' recreational, high school, and college teams, and a deeply loyal friend to everyone who knew him. It is difficult to say goodbye to such an incredible person - Tony inspired all who were lucky enough to cross his path, and his impact throughout Sacramento and beyond will continue to grow. He taught us that life is worth living as long as it is full of a loving family, a wide circle of meaningful friendships, constant laughter, and a true appreciation for fine food. Tony is survived by those that made him proudest in life, his true joys: wife and soul mate, Amy, and their daughters Lily (18) and Evan (15), his mother Rosalie, brother John, his large extended family, countless longtime friends, colleagues and peers. A Celebration of Life Service will commence on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at 2:00pm at The Elks Tower Sacramento, 921 11th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 - all are invited. The family is very grateful for the numerous offers of help and condolences. My prayers go to your family and friends Chef Tony. You will be missed dearly! I was one of your first students you taught at Kitchen Academy. I remember coming in pregnant and all to a man with such a warm smile and such a wonderful spirit. You loved reggae music which was so great because i was raised by my godfather who enjoyed the same music. He passed before he could meet my son so it made me feel so close to him just by hearing the music.Very recently I called you not even 2 months ago to ask you if I could use as a reference for a state job. Not only were you my teacher but my boss when I came to work for you at your bakery that I had no clue you owned. LOL I remember our phone conversation we had not to long ago you made me laugh you told me you had a picture of me on your work desk and i said really and you said not just you its of the class you were in when i taught at Kitchen Academy because I was the first class you taught. I came into your bakery a few days after your passing I believe not even 5 days after to see you. To see if I could work for you as a second job since my state job was seasonal and part time. I was devastated and heart broken to hear the bad news but I know your an angel in the sky. RIP 2 THE BEST TEACHER AND BOSS TONY VAN REES

Tony was so loved, and his voice and laughter will always remain in my heart and memory...to say he will be missed is a grand understatement. So grateful to have crossed his path throughout these many years. A fine man, indeed. Impossible to bake (or watch Star Trek reruns) without fondly thinking of him.

Man, I am one lucky duck for having met Amy, and then Tony! I'm sad he couldn't stay with us longer, but I'm so grateful I got to know him. He helped teach me that I didn't have to be bitter and cynical. It was a choice. Life happens, and sometimes it's great, and sometimes it sucks, but if you just keep moving with a good attitude, love, and a smile on your face you'll be a lot happier! And he didn't have to say a word to communicate it - I learned by watching him just be himself. I owe him a lot.

I was lucky enough to have both of Tony and Amy's girls in my kindergarten class. Tony was always so gracious, appreciative and positive each time I saw him. I think I gained about 15 pounds each school year I had the girls with all the amazing pastries he brought me :). Tony's smile was so contagious and his joy for life radiated to all around him. My deepest condolences to Amy, Lily and Evan.
