Antone Mihanovich Obituary

Tony Mihanovich died peacefully on July 25, 2025, at the age of 95. He was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming to Croatian emigrants Philip and Ljubica Mihanovich, and spent his early days attending local schools and graduating in 1948 from Rock Springs High School with honors. He went on to earn a B.S. in mathematics and statistics and a Master's Degree in statistics from the University of Wyoming. Tony served in the U.S. Army (1953-55) at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas with the Chemical Research Division.

Tony started his career in reliability engineering at Boeing Airplane in Seattle, WA but followed opportunity at Kodak in Rochester, NY where he met his future wife Joyce Krajewski. After a 6 month courtship, Tony married Joyce in her hometown of Siver Springs, NY. After shoveling snow for 3 years Tony decided California was the place to live. At the peak of the aerospace industry, Tony worked at Aerojet Corp. in the Nerva program. After leaving Aerojet he was employed at UC Davis, the California Energy Commission and retired from SMUD in 1993.

Tony was a rabid Democrat and participated in local politics, volunteering, advising and assisting in several local political races. He was always civic minded and was appointed and served on many local entities including the Carmichael Democratic Council, Carmichael Parks & Rec District, Sacramento City/County consolidation committee, American River Parkway Commission and the Sacramento County Grand Jury.

He loved his family and enjoyed weekend excursions with them to Oakland A's and Cal football games, nearby parks and zoos and was constantly at work on planning and revising areas of the backyard.

After retirement, Tony and Joyce enjoyed traveling, especially to Croatia to visit family members from his parents' homeland.

Tony was most proud of his four grandchildren and cherished every minute he could spend with them. Tony is survived by his wife Joyce of nearly 68 years, daughters Valeri (Paul) and Mara (Roy) and by his grandchildren Milan, Anton, Mirjana and Annika. No services will be held. Donations in his name to the ACLU and American River Parkway Foundation.

Yesterday

I first met Tony when I was new at SMUD. We subsequently had a number of chances to work together and I enjoyed all of them. He was my mentor and later my supervisor in the Planning section of Energy Services. We had more than a few lively discussions about politics over the years and I don´t think I ever bested him in any of them. He lived a good life! Sending my condolences to his family.
