Barbara Lungren Obituary

Barbara "Bobbi" (Kolls) Lungren
November 2, 1948 - July 22, 2022
Alexandria, Virginia - On July 22 Barbara "Bobbi" Kolls Lungren, loving wife, mother, and "Nana" took her last breath surrounded by her adoring family in the comfort of her home in Alexandria, VA. Born November 2, 1948 to Edward and Alice Kolls in Portland, Oregon, Bobbi grew up in Inglewood and Carson, CA. Her father died when she was 17 so she worked two jobs and attended school full time to help support her mother. Educated by the Sisters of St Joseph at St John Chrysostom, she graduated Inglewood High School, studied at El Camino Community College and Cal State Long Beach. During Bobbi's high school graduation trip to Yosemite National Park, she met Daniel E. Lungren, a University of Notre Dame student and native of Long Beach, CA, who finagled his way into Bobbi's beach volleyball game. Dan was smitten at first sight with the beautiful brunette and pursued a cross-country courtship while he acquired his college degree. Dan and Bobbi married on August 2, 1969 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Long Beach and held their reception at the home of Dr. John Charles and Lorraine K. Lungren. Dan attended Georgetown University Law School and Bobbi worked as personal secretary to the Counselor to the President in the West Wing of the White House from 1970-1972. After law school, Bobbi and Dan moved back to Long Beach where all three of their children were born. In 1976, Dan's first of many congressional elections kicked off with Bobbi taking on the role of Campaign Manager and walking precincts even with her third child in utero. In 1979, Bobbi and the family moved to Vienna, VA. She was involved at the kids' school, Our Lady of Good Counsel, and worked as a travel agent. Every summer Bobbi and the family returned home to California and spent time with her mom, her in-laws, and her many nieces and nephews. In 1988, Bobbi and family moved to Sacramento, CA where she was active at the kids' schools; worked as a real estate agent and at the California Waste Management Board; and later as the Assistant to the City Manager of Folsom, CA. In 2005, they split their time between Sacramento and Alexandria when Dan returned to Congress. A decade later, they became full-time Virginia residents, and their three adult children and respective families live close by. She retired from her careers in her 60s but continued to "work" as #1 Nana, her family and grandchildren are her greatest love and legacy. Bobbi is survived by her husband of 53 years, Daniel Edward Lungren, son Jeffrey Edward Lungren (Jennifer Dyjak Lungren), daughters Kelly Lungren McCollum (Jason McCollum) and Kathleen Lungren Jobe (Ousman Jobe); grandchildren Reagan (19), Julia (17), Jack (14), and Fiona (12) Lungren; Kayden (9), Zane (7), Karina (5) Lungren Jobe. Bobbi enjoyed her daily devotionals, weekly Bible Study classes, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She served as a Eucharistic Minister at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Alexandria. Close to Bobbi's heart are the Dominican Sisters of Mary in Ann Arbor, MI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the nuns @ www.sistersofmary.org; Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, 4597 Warren Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. Services info:Visitation is 6-8PM, Friday, July 29, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22309. Dan,

So sorry to hear of your wife´s passing. I didn´t have the opportunity to meet her, but from everything you´ve told me she was an incredible person - a political partner, wonderful wife, caring mother and doting Nana. You have my deepest condolences.

Dear Dan and family, my heart goes out to all of you. Memories of Bobbi fill my mind......a smiling, kind, and loving wife and Mother. She had a lovely sense of humor and a keen mind. She rejoiced in all of the successes and joys of her husband and children. Please know that all of you will be in my prayers. Bobbi is most certainly in Heaven already, asking (or telling?) God for all of the things her family needs. I am holding you all in my heart. With much love, Marty and family

Dan:

Marilyn and I send our love and best wishes to you and the family. Barbara was a key to your life together. She was also a very impressive (and tough) Assistant City Manager. I can´t remember the client I had for some problem with Folsom, but she said no politely, firmly, and with no nonsense. And she was right on the merits!

Take care of yourself.
