Barbara STUART Obituary

STUART, Barbara McKee
Born in Placerville on November 30, 1917 weighing 2 pounds 6 ounces, Barbara was the smallest child to survive in El Dorado County at that time. Her parents were Joseph McKee and Pearl Varozza, both second generation settlers in the Gold Country. Joseph bought Placerville Hardware in 1907 and operated it for over 40 years. Her brothers, both deceased, were George W. McKee, longtime owner of the Round Tent Store and unofficial Placerville historian, and Joseph F. McKee, international engineer with Morrison Knudsen.

Having grown up spending summers at the family cabin ''Slide Inn'', Barbara developed a great love of the outdoors, and was still climbing mountains into her 70s. Growing, cooking, canning and preserving food, learned by necessity and loved by Barbara, delighted recipients of her efforts for decades. She also adored millinery work and looked fabulous in her finished products.

Her marriage in 1948 to William A. Stuart of Sacramento led to many adventures as a military wife, adapting to and loving such diverse postings as San Bernardino, Newfoundland and Taiwan. Upon Bill's retirement in 1966 they moved to Carmichael, where she resided for 33 years. During that time she did a splendid job of raising two daughters, enjoyed volunteer work and early morning five-mile walks on the American River bike trail.

Barbara died in Alamo, CA on 10/10/10 at 0101. She gave much to many, took every opportunity that life had to offer and the sound of her laughter will ring for eternity.

Pre-deceased by her husband and daughter Leslie S. Preston of Monrovia, CA. Survived by daughter Alison Stuart of Oakland; grandson William Preston of Boston, MA; nephew David McKee of Madison, WI; niece Sally Tollette, and nephews, Michael and Steven Stuart, all of Sacramento.

It is through her gracious daughter, Alison, that I have met Barbara's delightful spirit. Her beauty and memories shine in Alison's smile - sharing her mother's joys in life. I am honored to know them both. Warm hugs to you, my dear friend.

How honored I am to have known Barbara Stuart and to be able to call her sister-in-law. She was a beautiful lady with a great zest for life and an unforgettable laugh.

I was very privileged to be the recipient of her bounty of delicious food. She was a gourmet cook. Those wonderful meals were served up with warm hospitality in a very beautiful home full of worldly and family treasures. I remember, too, her lovely roses and lush camellias. I was lucky to share with her a few morning walks along the river (or in the mall when weather interfered). It was a good time for chatting and viewing the beauty of nature with someone so enthusiastic about the flora and fauna.

A special time was a trip to France and Switzerland. With a chuckle in my heart, I remember so vividly, when during that trip we put Barbara, my Mother, and their luggage into the tiny, caged “lift” in our Paris hotel. Up they went to their room. Then in an instant they immediately appeared still in the lift. We pushed the button and tried again to send them on their way. Down they came again, and again, and again. One can imagine how we were all bent over, totally consumed in laughter.

During that same trip, in Mergoscia, Switzerland, in the garden of the charming hillside home of the Swiss cousins, Swiss and American flags flying, we sat and sipped wine and grappa. Laughter rang in the air as we all tried to converse with one another. It was a special family bond.

Never to be forgotten..….. such wonderful memories shared with Barbara.

I remember Barbara as a very beautiful, fun-loving, classy lady with wonderful cooking skills. I still think of her every time I take a tray of stuffed mushrooms to a party! I can only imagine what she is cooking up for the angels!

As a younger family member of the Swiss side of the family, I considered Bobbie my GLAMOROUS cousin who led a wildly exciting life whom I envied and admired. I thought she was wonderful and I wanted to grow up to be just like her, and throughout both our lives, I've never seen any reason to alter that opinion
