Dr. French helped me decide what options to take for my cervical spine. He was a wonderful man and a great doctor. You can tell how kind he is when talking to him for couple of minutes. He helped a lot of people. RIP

I always thought about Dr. French throughout the years. I just happen to google his name and saw the news. What an angel heaven has in the kingdom. My son who is now 32 yrs old now and is doing very well, Dr. French performed a major brain tumor on him when he was only 5 months old he did 2 surguries along with shunts. Im getting teary eyes just the thought of all that took place. After several years as his patient, Rashad had a clean bill of health. Thank you Dr. French. I just had to say something

To the family of Dr. French:
Only recently did I learn of the untimely death of Dr. French. I am another of his patients, a back surgery survivor who is still able to walk due in no small part to Dr. French's tremendous skill and compassion. Over 30 years ago, I waited weeks for a first appointment. Even though I had interviewed with 2 other surgeons and could barely walk, was in great pain, it worth the long wait. As so many others have written, the good doctor put me at ease and I had faith in his ability to perform a successful surgery. His name had been mentioned through a family friend --another Sacramento physician-- who said that Dr. French was the ONLY surgeon he trusted to operated on his back and that I should wait for him.
I was put in the hospital (at that time, the new Sutter General) the next day and operated on the following. By that point, Dr. French mentioned that it was no longer an elective surgery based on the finding after my Mylogram X-ray.
I am writing even though I just found out this terrible news because I want to be part of a loud voice speaking to the family of Barry French, MD. He meant so much to so many patients. Please take some comfort in that knowledge.
I will keep you in my thoughts.
Sincerely,
Celeste Anne Rusconi

I had a back fusion by Dr. French in 2005. After meeting and discussing my case I knew right then I could trust in him...I am so sad to discover today that he had passed.. I was in a bad car accident this Xmas. I called to see if dr. French would see me again. I had all the confidence in the world in Dr. Barry French... He helped so many others like myself to continue living a better pain free life!! he will be missed...

Dr. French did surgery in 1998 on my back. It was a two level fusion with the CAGE. I am still doing very well, went back to work as a Firefighter and even to this day, can walk, run, bend, stoop, twist, work out. God must have led me to this talented surgeon and guided his hands during the 10 hour operations. He will be truly missed. RIP my friend, you have served humanity well.

Dr. French was the best! I had to have spinal fusion surgery. I went to Dr French for a second opinion and I knew I was in the presence of greatness. Dr French showed compassion, explained the procedure thoroughly, made me feel at ease leading up to the procedure with his professionalism. He was a class act, who made a difference in my life and my well being. My condolences to the French Family.

Babysitting Barry on Saturday nights was one of the highlights and lowlights of my teen years. However it was my penance for getting the family car on Friday nights. Unfortunately, our age difference, career demands and constant relocating meant our relationship was one of long distance calls or quick visits at family gatherings. I was and am so proud of my young brother's achievements in life. Joan, Adam, Stephen and I will miss him more than words can say.

I am so saddened by the loss of Barry. I was able to work beside him in the operating room and care for his patients in the PACU. His caring compassionate care of his patients, friends and family made me smile often. I remember years ago when I was the Perioperative Educator at SMCS late one evening I was working in my office and there was a tap at my door. I opened it and there was Barry. He was working late, too, and he was hungary. He knew that I always kept goodies in my office for the staff and physicians. Knowing why he was there I asked him if he wanted some candy. He was thrilled when I opened my file drawer and pulled out a huge bag of Peanut M&Ms....I pored him a small bowl full and he muttered, "AHHhh, my favorite". He sat in my office for about 30 minutes eating his M&Ms and sharing OR stories with me....as he got up to leave he turned and said, "Don't tell Patty I had that candy...." I never did tell Patty until now and cherish that evening so close to my heart.
Thank you, Barry for making the world a nice place....I will miss seeing you at Music Circus.....

I'm very thankful for all the memories we shared together, and loved all the laughter we had in my studio salon. My favorite moments were when you would walk in and state " don't make me look like a Pin Head, Patty won't let me in the house if I look like a Pin Head " I will always treasure the stories you would share. Lastly I would like to say Thank You for the Special goodbye in Carmel. I will never forget the seagulls eyes and the warm peaceful feeling I had inside.
Wishing you peace Dr.French

The almost thirty years that i worked with Barry, he always set the highest standard in our community for patient care. He always set an example for me as to truly caring about a patient as though they were his own family. I saw this in his character year after year, patient after patient. But more than this, I got to know him as a friend. I got see him at home as a father, a grand father and as a husband. he taught me so much about me. i'm thankful for so much he gave me, and for his fellowship. A Great spirit in every way he shall live always. Gary Watkins

Even as early as the 1960s, it was obvious that Barry was an extraordinary human being destined for great accomplishments. It is obvious now that he did achieve a purposeful career and enjoyed a full family life. Please accept my sincere sympathy for your profound loss. Even though Barry and I have had no contact since 1969, he always had my love and respect.

Barry French was my uncle, who over the years also became my friend.
I still remember the excitement and sadness everyone felt when he moved to California to carry on his medical career..
I will miss his warmth, his dry sense of humour, the twinkle in his eye, his smile and the sense of security he provided everyone.
We were so lucky to have had him. As I read the tributes, I see our "hero" was also a hero to many others.

Uncle Barry was a wonderful man who always brought warmth to a room. It was such a treat when Aunt Patty and Uncle Barry would come visit at Easter, Thanksgiving, or other family events. I met Dr. French after an old spine fracture put me in a wheelchair in March. Meticulous is not word enough for Dr. French. He spent hours explaining the situation and options to me and my wife. The "five hour" operation ended up being eight because of complications and I was walking again in days. We've lost a great and good man.

He was a gifted miracle worker who brought my daughter from a wheelchair back to walking and leading a normal life. This would not have been possible without his skill, talent, and gifted hands. He was a rare surgeon with compassion, patience and kindness who actually listened to his patients. His smile was contagious. I am still in shock over his sudden death and will think of him always each time I look at my daughter live life and pain free. The world has lost such a gifted and talented surgeon and man.

Dr. French did my back surgery on January of this year. He was really nice and genteal. What we liked most about him was that he had worked with kids that had CP, just like I have. He was not in the job for money, if so he would have retired years ago. I truly believe he just liked doing it. I am very fortunate to have met him. He was a blessing in my life, and I am sure in others lives as well. May you rest in peace Dr. French
God Bless,

Dr. French removed a benign tumor from my spine in 1995. Prior to the surgery, he spent over two hours with me and my wife explaining, with pictures, the procedure. He got me to relax, and I knew this doctor was fully capable. It isn't often that a busy doctor will take that much time with a patient. I will always remeber how he really took care for me. And, today I am fine. I will never forget Dr. French. He is at the top of my list for great doctors.

Dr. Barry French, was the best Dr. ever!
I come to know him by seeing him with my Husband whom was refer to for back surgery. He proformed his surgery and gave him much relief.
Five days before my husbands surgery I blew a disk out in my back. When. I was waiting outside of surgery room to see how my husband was doing, he looked at me and saw I was in a lot of pain walking with a walker and he asked me when was I coming to see him for myself.
I needed Back fusion and others procedures done. 2 months later I was operated on.
Because he was and is the best neurologist in his field, I got the best treatment. I can now walk again without sever pain.
Dr.French was truthful, kind, gentle. The kindness I needed and his examinations he was very gentle with me and my progress. I was still under his care for about another 6 months. I come to love and respect him very much. I will miss him! I send my condolences to His beautiful wife, and family. Along with his assistant, Wendy and his team I'm sure I will be seeing. May God be with you all and bring you comfort in this very sad time.
Sincerely Daisy Gallisdorfer patient

Dr. French was one of the kindest and most gentle people I have ever met. I was truly blessed to have a man of his caliber, skill and compassion perform my spine surgery earlier this year, and just two months later, perform spine surgery on my wife. I could not have been more pleased with how he treated me, and my wife.
When my wife and I heard the news today we could not have been more saddened. I can only imagine the hole his passing has left in his family's lives and hearts. And I am sure the same loss is just as profound for his staff. You could see they truly loved Barry, and respected his gentle compassion. He was truly one of the finest people I have ever known.

We said goodbye yesterday to Barry French, the father of our son-in-law
Greg. My husband and I have only known Barry the last 3 years or so since our daughter Kyle and Greg became engaged and since married. Barry always seemed to be a very sweet and gentle man and a kind of renaissance man. We learned so much more about him at the service through eulogies given about him. A letter written by one of his patients about how kind Dr. French was and how he took such care and patience in explaining why surgery was not possible (hope I got that right - too many tears at that the time). We met one of his patients after the service who said Dr. French literally saved her life - twice and how grateful she was. We heard how after saving the life of a 43 year old man who had an aneurysm, Barry's wife Patty who was also his nursing assistant during the surgery was on the phone after surgery cancelling their planned vacation that they were suppose to be going on the next day. When asked why, Patty replied that Barry would never leave a patient after a life or death surgery for a vacation. We should all be so lucky to have such a caring physician. Nurses talked about how when a mistake was made he treated them in such a kind and respectful manner explaining to them how something should have been handled. As a husband, father, grandfather, colleague, friend, doctor Barry is truly going to be missed. We wish we all could have had more time with him. I recently read a book called Do No Harm by a neurosurgeon from London, England. I had so many questions I wanted to ask Barry about the book but never had the opportunity. Now it's too late. Live today, tomorrow may never come. Rest in peace, Barry. We hope your family finds solace in the wonderful memories you have left behind.

Dr Barry French and I were students of neuropathology for a year together forty years ago in Toronto which seems like yesterday. He was a great colleague and it was a good year. He was a very intelligent, knowledgable and most enjoyable man to spend that year of study with. I am glad that he found such a fulfilling life for himself in California. My condolences to his family.

Our heart felt sorrow and our prayers for God's comfort goes out to Dr. French's family. He saved my son when he was in 7th grade and performed several more surgeries on him through the years. My son is 45 today and thrives with a life of thanksgiving for life. Our family could never thank Dr. French enough for being a miracle in our lives. We thank you his family for the extra care and hours he gave to his patients because we know that took from time with you. We admire and respected him for the wonderful doctor and kind compassionate person he was. We know he will be greatly missed but has certainly left a legacy behind.

At fifty one years old I had terrible back pain which Dr. French diagnosed. And monitored with an MRI, fortunately for me when it ruptured one year later he knew what to do and after the surgery I could walk and sit within one hour !, with no pain, my son had cancer at the time and I almost did not have the surgery but Dr. French said he knew he could help me so I went ahead !! He could be compassionate and trust worthy and his gal Wendy was also the best!!, I really feel bad that so many people will not be able to have his care, I pray for his wife and family at this time of loss, but we have an awesome God in heaven to be with them , giving His peace which is beyond understanding, Rosanne Smith Kearns
