Betty Manolakas Obituary
October 26, 1920 - August 10, 2024
Sacramento, California - Betty Jane Manolakas passed away at her residence in Sacramento on August 10, 2024. Betty was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 26, 1920, to parents Edward Bernard Heise and Mary Elizabeth Evans. Her beloved sister Margaret Jean (1924-1986) was born four years later.
Betty graduated from Cass Technical High School in 1937 and earned a degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Michigan in 1942. During high school, she met the love of her life, George Stamatios Manolakas, marrying in 1942. During George's overseas service in World War II, Betty worked in a munitions factory to support the war effort. Later, she started a career with the Housing Department of the City of Detroit where she rose rapidly through the ranks. Throughout these years, Betty was very proud to have published numerous short stories with notable magazines and published several children's books. After George's discharge, they migrated West to California and settled in Whittier where George practiced medicine for many years and Betty raised five children. Betty was a devoted wife and a loving mother.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, George, and her oldest child, Thomas (Sam) George Manolakas. She is survived by her children, Dale Manolakas (Roy Shults), Christine Manolakas (Edwin (Ted) Grebitus), George Manolakas (Lois) and Robert Manolakas (Milka). She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Kathleen Manolakas, Heather Manolakas, Anne Manolakas, William Dentino, Stamatios Dentino, Marilyn Manolakas and one great grandchild, Kallias Manolakas.
The service will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 616 Alhambra Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95816 on August 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Interment at 12:30 at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4300 Folsom Blvd., CA 95819 and luncheon at the Church Hall following the interment. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Greek Church of the Annunciation in her memory.
