Bobby Prater Obituary

PRATER, Bobby Ray
Bobby R. Prater, age 63, passed away peacefully in Anchorage, Ala., on August 12, 2007, with his wife by his side. He fought a courageous and unwavering battle with cancer. Bob was born July 1, 1944, in Dumas, Texas, to the late Norman and Imogene Prater. A retired U.S. Army and Vietnam veteran, Bob is survived by Jean, his loving wife of 39 years. He is the father to Kevin Prater and daughter-in-law Pradeep of Anchorage, Ala., Michelle Mells and son-in-law George of Sacramento, and Bobby Prater Jr. and daughter-in-law Haley Williamson of Sacramento; and is the very proud Papa to Brittany, Brandon, and Nicole. He is also survived by his brother Larry Prater and sister-in-law Cheryl of Carmichael and his sister Jackie King and brother-in-law, Pete of Myrtle Point, Ore., in addition to many nieces and nephews. Bob was an avid lover of fishing and camping and he enjoyed vacationing in Alaska. His first priority in life was always his family and it gave him great joy to spend time with them. For 11 years he was the most loving day care provider for his grandchildren and he gave to them the love and guidance that only a Papa can give. He recently decided to move to Alaska so that he and his wife could enjoy its serene beauty, peace and wildlife. In keeping with Bob's wishes, funeral services will not be held.

I have tried to say something here three times already but words just escape me. First of all, to Aunt Jean, Kevin, Michelle and Bobby I am so very sorry for your loss. Even though it seems the family was having to prepare for this, it doesn't make the outcome any easier. I loved seeing all the pictures that have been added. The love Uncle Bobby had for his family shines in each of those pictures. I think we can all agree that his love and devotion for family came naturally from his parents as we all know how loving they were towards family. What a wonderful trait to continue in our family. Please know that I am thinking of you all during this difficult time. I find comfort in knowing that he is now with Papa and Grandma, Auntie and Unkie sitting on a porch in heaven watching over all of us.
Love,
Janelle

My Dear Brother
I am so proud and happy that you became a man of God. I know that God held you up and gave you strength through your illness. I know that he was standing by your side in your last hours to lead you to your new home in heaven. As the ones left behind we have to remember that this is not an ending for you but a glorious new beginning.
I thank God for the years and the memories that we were able to share. Love held us all together. I will miss you always.
I know how much you loved Jean, your family and your country. I know how proud you are of each and everyone of them.
I am so blessed and so proud to call you "Brother".
Until we meet again, I love you.

THE BROKEN CHAIN

We little knew that morning that God would call your name,
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
--Author Unknown

We love you so much Dad. We take comfort in knowing that one day we will all be together again, but until that time, we will miss you deeply and we will keep you in our heart always.

Love forever,
Michelle, George, Brittany, Brandon and Nicole
