Bruce Scarborough Obituary

SCARBOROUGH, Bruce
Welles
Oct 11, 1917 - Apr 20, 2004

Bruce Welles Scarborough was born in Boulder CO, Oct 11, 1917 and lived there till drafted into the military during World War II. He served for four years in the Army Signal Corps and became the 1st Sgt of his organization. After the War he finally moved to the Sacramento area and became a civil service employee. He retired after thirty years working for the federal government, primarily as an accountant, computer programmer and data system manager. His immediate family included a sister, Elizabeth, in Medford OR, son Bruce Jr. and Janelle Embree and her husband Ken of Sacramento. Other family members include Ron Scarborough, Walnut Creek and Sandy of Salt Lake City; Weldon, Medford, OR, and Clel of Vancouver WA., Glenda, Heather and Daryl Dennis of Springfield, OR, Robin and Constantine of Portland OR, and Paula and Kirk Reuer and family of Sand Point, ID. Bruce and Ruth moved to the Sacramento area recently from Vancouver WA in order to be closer to family members as serious health problems intervened. Family members here included Bruce Jr., Janelle and Ken Embree, and Ruth's daughters Linda Drever and Nancy Miller and their families. Bruce dearly loved and cherished his family. In return, his family loved and respected him and looked forward to being with him. His children and grandchildren reminisce often about fun times spent on fishing and camping trips, especially those along the California, Oregon and Washington coastal and mountain areas. After retirement he became an avid woodcarver and collector, turning out beautiful bowls and vases. On one occasion he created a whole choir of angels, and later a group of 25 Kokopeli figurines which he presented to the National Board of Directors of AARP in Washington, D.C. Gardening was his favorite pastime and he took great pride in growing elephant garlic and many herbs. He gladly shared his successful crops of garlic, rhubarb, green beans and zucchini. Neighbors retaliated with gifts of raspberries, yellow plums and jars of jams and apple butter. Bruce died quietly in his sleep at Kaiser Hospital in Roseville October 20, 2004, of complications from bladder and kidney infections. At his personal request there will be no funeral or graveside services. A small private celebration of life for immediate family will be scheduled at a later date.
