Charles Kahler Obituary

Charles David Kahler Jr.

December 11, 1935 - November 11, 2023

Sacramento, California - Charles David (Chuck) Kahler, Jr., of Sacramento CA, passed away peacefully of natural causes at home with loving family present on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Chuck was born on December 11, 1935, in Cleveland, OH, to Eleanor Koch Kahler and Charles David Kahler Sr. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, as well as a valued friend and neighbor.

Chuck attended St. Edward's High School and The Ohio State University where he also completed Air Force ROTC basic training. Always personable, people-oriented and mechanically inclined, he enjoyed his career in sales and service for Ecolab (formerly Economics Laboratories, Inc.) where he worked for 25 years, in Northeastern Ohio and later in the Sacramento CA region.

He married Laurann McGovern in 1956 and they soon had a family of four children. That marriage ended in divorce in 1978. From his days as a young father, Chuck developed an interest in home improvement and remodeling for his family. He later married Sue Payne and served as owner-builder for the construction of a dream home in Dillon Beach on Tomales Bay for himself and Sue (who predeceased him in May 2022.)

Chuck and Sue loved to entertain family and life-long friends in Dillon Beach, as they had in Sacramento and, later, in Lincoln Hills, CA and Eskaton Village, Carmichael, CA. before they moved to Oakmont of East Sacramento in September, 2021. In every community where he lived, Chuck was noted for his helpful and generous approach to others, warm smile, good humor and gratitude for life.

Chuck especially loved having his grandsons visit Dillon Beach and walking with them to the tidepools in the estuary. When not entertaining in their beautiful homes, Chuck and Sue enjoyed travel adventures across the country and around the world.

Chuck is survived by his four children: Karen (William Nelson), Linda (Michael Runeare), Terri Anne Cooper, and Christopher (Catrina), grandsons Matthew Kahler and Cameron Joseph Cooper, as well as Sue's son Stephen Payne, her daughter Jennifer Ewing, and Jennifer's son, Michael Ewing. Also surviving Chuck are his sister Nancy Zabriskie, his brother Robert Kahler and their families, as well as the family of his sister Joanne McDonnell who predeceased him.

Chuck will be honored with a Memorial Mass on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Sacramento CA.

Condolences may be expressed at WF Gormley and Sons (www.gormleyandsons.com). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento (https://habitatgreatersac.org/).
