David Hammond Obituary

David Hammond
March 15, 1941 - November 20, 2022
Sacramento, California - David Edward Hammond, age 81, of Sacramento, CA, passed away on November 20, 2022, following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Brown Hammond and Clarice Bell Hammond.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Hammond; daughter, Jennifer Gannon (Dan); son, Jeffrey Hammond; stepdaughter; Kristina Palmer (Scott), all of Sacramento and stepdaughter, Jennifer Reents of Camino; sister, Mary Baker (Chuck) of Libby, MT; and brother, Thomas Hammond residing in AZ. Grandchildren Liam Gannon of Sacramento; Jakob Palmer of Ventura; and Jillian Palmer of Sacramento.
David was born in San Francisco, CA on March 15, 1941. He lived in Stockton, CA throughout his childhood and attended California State University Sacramento, earning his teaching credential in 1966. He settled in Sacramento where he taught 4th, 5th, & 6th grades at Whitney Elementary School, in the San Juan Unified School District, for 36 years before retiring in 2001.
David was a lifelong runner, participating in numerous races over the years. He enjoyed cycling and workouts at the gym, lovingly earning the nickname of "gym rat" by his wife. Gardening was a passion of his, growing fruit and vegetables for many years and sharing the abundance with family, friends, and local food closets.
David was a member of Christ Community Church and was involved with the Churches' food ministry for a number of years along with volunteering at local food closets.
David will be remembered as a quiet, gentle man, who loved the outdoors and spent many hours puttering in his yard. Friends and former students always recognized him whenever he drove his classic 1967 Porsche 912 around town. He had a great laugh and enjoyed the simple things of life. He had a strong Christian faith and a deep love for the Lord. His favorite quote, which he shared many times throughout his illness, "It is what it is", will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.
Special thanks to Denise Brumfield, Sue Yuan, Shovonne Lands, and the staff at D & T Senior Care for their kindness and loving care throughout David's illness.
A memorial service will be held on January 21, 2023, at 1 PM at Christ Community Church, 5025 Manzanita Av., Carmichael, CA, 95608. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association at act.alz.org.

David, my brother, was my best friend growing up and until he passed. We laughed and he teased me often over the years. I will miss him and our being so close. I know he is at peace now. I love you my sweet brother.
