David Russell Obituary

David E. Russell

March 19, 1935 - April 1, 2025

Lincoln, California - David E. Russell, Chief Justice of the Ninth Circuit Eastern District Bankruptcy Court, passed away on April 1, 2025, leaving behind a distinguished legacy of professional excellence, intellectual curiosity, and enduring relationships. Born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, in 1935, David's journey took him across the country, shaping a life rich in achievement and meaningful relationships.

David pursued higher education at the University of California, Berkeley, and subsequently earned his law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law. Early in his career, David worked in San Francisco with the prominent accounting firm Lybrands, Ross Bros. & Montgomery, where his talent and drive became evident. In 1965, he relocated to Sacramento to establish a law partnership, initially forming Russell, Humphries & Estabrook & Dashiel, later evolving into Russell, Jarvis, Estabrook & Dashiel, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to his profession. In 1986, David was called to the bench, where he distinguished himself as a jurist of integrity, fairness, and wisdom, culminating in his role as Chief Justice.

David retired in 2000, yet his dedication to justice remained steadfast. He was immediately recalled to the bench and continued to serve for an additional fifteen years, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.

During his childhood, David lived in Meriden, Mississippi, and spent his teenage years in Hilo, Hawaii, where he formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. He cherished the Hawaiian spirit and continued to visit the islands several times a year to reconnect with old friends and enjoy the beauty that had shaped his early years.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, David was an enthusiastic hodophile, passionate about exploring new cultures and the wonders of the world with his loving wife, Sandra at his side. Together they explored every continent except Antarctica. His competitive spirit and sharp mind were evident in his love for duplicate bridge (Life Master), where his skills and camaraderie enriched the lives of many fellow players. David was fondly known as "Oba" in bridge circles. Ever a loyal Chicago Cubs fan, he cheered passionately for this team through thick and thin.

Above all, David was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sandra Niemeyer Ahrens Russell; his children Penny Ahrens Carolan (Craig), Dirk Russell, Kent Russell, Stacy Ahrens, Laura Russell Rohe (Matthew), Jeff Ahrens (Michelle) and Rachel Russell Weninger (John); his grandchildren, Courtney Carolan Arnold (Derrick), Megan Carolan Martin (Dan), Jon Ahrens (Kira), Chase Ahrens (Sally), Reed Ahrens Feldman, Alex Weninger, and Max Weninger; his great-grandchildren, Jack Arnold, Paige Arnold, Taylor Martin, and Felix Ahrens. He is also remembered fondly by a bevy of in-laws, nieces and nephews, spread across the country. David was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Nellie Russell and his brother, Professor George Albert "Al" Russell.

David's ashes will be taken to his final resting place in Laupahoehoe, Hawaii.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Boalt Hall School of Law, Berkeley, California. Donations can be directed to Berkeley Law Development and Alumni Relations @ [email protected]. Alternately, friends and loved ones are encouraged to raise a glass in celebration of David's remarkable journey.

In 1982 I joined Russell, Jarvis, Estabrook and Dashiell as an associate. Dave introduced me to the world of Bankruptcy law. Over lunches at the Palomino Room and in long conversations at the office, he taught me the foundations of what became my 30 year Bankruptcy practice. I am forever grateful to him and his early mentorship.

Judge Russel was kind and fair to all - including BK novices like me who had to learn the ropes as we attempted to climb.

He was temperate, understanding, and helpful.

Good Bye to a Good Judge.
