Dean HOTCHKISS Obituary

HOTCHKISS, Dean E.
April 29, 1917 - June 12, 2011
Dean E. Hotchkiss was born in Lemoore, California, the youngest son of Earl and Dona Hotchkiss. He is survived by Shirley, his wife of 69 years, daughters Linda York and Elaine Frazel (Miles), four grandchildren, Chris York (Truc), Stephen York (Janelle), Heather Hamilton (Scott), and Thomas Frazel (Trudi). He has five great-grandchildren.

He came to Sacramento in his early 20's, started Sutter Casket Company with two partners, and retired after 40 years in the business. He played his first round of golf at Land Park in 1947, and continued playing as often as possible for the next 63 years. He joined El Macero County Club in 1963, and when he was 72, he shot a 70. This was the first time in more than one million rounds of golf played at El Macero that anyone had equaled his age or better. By the time he played his last round, he had shot his age more than 396 times. He has won the Sacramento County and City Seniors' annual tournaments, as well as low gross in 12 El Macero Seniors' Club Championships, and low gross 5 times in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Seniors. In addition to loving the sport, he also served as president of the Pacific Senior Golf Assn. and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Seniors.

Other great pleasures with his wife Shirley were square dancing, vacationing in Santa Cruz, Palm Springs and Hawaii plus trips to Europe, Alaska, Canada and Mexico. He and Shirley were avid and life long bridge players. He never missed a chance to see his family and great-grandchildren. He grew roses, grapes, and fruit trees in their backyard and was known for his homemade fudge and ice cream.

He will be remembered for his strength of character, friendly demeanor, positive attitude, determination to make things right, and a kind and loving heart. A recent quote: 'I've had a long and wonderful life.'

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 17 at 11am at George L. Klumpp Chapel of Flowers, Riverside Blvd. & 2nd Ave. Private interment at Odd Fellows Lawn.

In lieu of flowers, Dean requested donations to Trigeminal Neuralgia Association, 408 W. University Ave, Suite 602, Gainesville, FL 32601-3248.

So sorry to hear. Many blessings and peace to Dean's family. This picture is of my grandfather, Sam Hotchkiss. I see a family resemblence.

I would like to express my condolences to Mr. Hotchkiss' family on the passing of an elder Lemoore born citizen. (I think we traded places as I spent my first 20 years and born in Sacramento and spent the next 35 in Lemoore.) History is very important to me and not sure if the Hotchkiss Drive about 2 miles from downtown Lemoore is related and if Mr. Hotchkiss' family knew they maybe deep in the beginning of the town of Lemoore.
