Carmichael resident, 84-year-old Dennis Max Werking, succumbed to a 4+-month battle with multiple medical issues including cancer and kidney failure while surrounded by family on January 18, 2023.
Max, son of Earl & Doris Werking, was born in Muncie, Indiana on June 26th, 1938. He graduated from Ball State Teachers College and received his BS in Math. An AFROTC distinguished graduate was sent to Texas A&M. to study meteorology for a master's degree. Max preferred math and skipped most of the weather classes. A visit from a USAF colonel persuaded him to refocus on meteorology, avoiding the repayment of tuition dollars.
Max's USAF career found him in Texas, Arizona, Yokota Japan. After completing Air War College, he was promoted two years below the zone as a Lieutenant Colonel while stationed at McClellan AFB in North Highlands California.
With 16 years of active duty, Max changed courses and started a Real Estate school and founded the American Home and Investment company. He enjoyed a successful 40 + year career including reaching Realtor Emeritus with the National Association of Realtors in 2014.
Max married Connie Lynn Thomas on November 7th, 1971, and she bravely agreed to help raise his four sons. He was a devoted husband and father. Max and Connie renewed their 50th anniversary wedding vows in 2021 with the entire extended family cheering them on.
Max is survived by his wife Connie, and their four sons: Greg (Teri) Werking, 65, of Salt Lake City, UT; Bruce Werking, 63, of Carmichael, CA; Andy (Rachel) Werking, 62, of Sacramento, CA; and Doug (Christine) 60 Werking of Boulder, CO; along with Max's siblings, sister Peggy Johnson and brother Don Werking of Phoenix AZ; and ten grandchildren, Kip, Kiel, Spencer, Ryan, Victoria, Shallon, Sheena, Austin, Nicole and Max jr. and nine great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at noon on February 2, 2023, at Sierra View Funeral Chapel in Carmichael, CA. (6201 Fair Oaks Blvd 916-481-1515) Casual clothes are preferred.
A Celebration of Life will be held following the service at the Milagro Center (milagrocentre.com) starting near 1:15 pm.
