Dillon Rhoades Obituary

Dillon I. Rhoades
February 7, 1930 - February 4, 2022
Pioneer, California - Dillon Ingvert Rhoades was born Feb. 7, 1930, in Mandan, N. Dakota to Ingvert Dillon Rhoades and Ruth Genevieve (Hunke) Rhoades. He passed away peacefully on Feb. 4, 2022, at his home with his wife, Marvel, at his side. He was in Hospice care battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Parkinson's for a long time.
Dillon graduated from Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana in 1958 with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. After college he joined the Navy and was promoted to Boatswains Mate 3rd Class and stationed in Seattle. He was in charge of a 35-foot cabin cruiser called the Captain's Gig. His shipmates nicknamed him "Dusty" and it stayed with him throughout his life.
In 1958 Dusty married Florence Ronquillo of Billings, Montana, and they were blessed with a daughter, Tina. They moved to Dunsmuir, CA where Dusty worked for the State of California Division of Highways (now Caltrans) from 1958 to 1968. He then moved to Sacramento and worked for the Sacramento Division of Highways and Bridges from 1968 to 1986. He was licensed as a Professional Civil Engineer and a Professional Traffic Engineer. He was the Sacramento County Senior Civil Engineer for many years before his retirement in 1986 when he then became a consultant for several years. Dusty was instrumental in getting the Bike Lane Program established in the county of Sacramento.
In 1979 Dusty married Marvel (Calvert) Rotea. They lived in Carmichael, CA for a while, moved to Detroit Lakes, MN for 4 years, then moved back to Pioneer, CA where they resided for 25 years. They enjoyed many years of camping and fishing as a family. Their 43 years of marriage together was one of peace and love.
Dusty was fun and loving, kind and gentle. He was a thoughtful and generous man of integrity and quiet faith. He was a devoted husband and father. Dusty lived a life that was well respected by all who knew him.
Dusty is survived by his wife, Marvel, his sister Judie Cherry, their children Tina, Andy, April, and Ruth, grandchildren, Courtney, Katelynn, and Christopher and new great grandson Joseph. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Warren.
We want to give special thanks to the Hospice of Amador-Calaveras County for their great care during Dusty's transition. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to this local Hospice: 1500 S. Hwy. 49, Suite 205, Jackson, CA 95642.
A memorial service will be March 12, 2022, at 11:00 A.M.at the Daneri Mortuary, 415 Broadway in Jackson, 95642, CA.

Dusty Rhoades was a man of integrity. He had a sense of fairness and an interesting sense of humor. Dusty listened well and could carry on a thoughtful, rational conversation. He also was gentle, witty, and whimsical.

I loved the way Dusty cherished my sister, Marvel. They had 43 years of love and laughter together; 43 years of support for one another through sickness and in health.

Dusty is already greatly missed!

I'm really going to miss Uncle Dillon. He was so creative and interesting, and a lot of fun. He taught me that cardboard is just as necessary as duct tape, and his insistence on perfection was always challenging! I named my spirited stubborn gelding "Dusty" so the memories live on.... My prayers and sympathies for family and friends. Love you all.

I have great memories of growing up with Dillon. He was the smartest one in the family and I relied on him to take care of the rest of us. I have lost my mentor and I will miss him terribly.
