Don Edgar Obituary

A lifelong educator, Don was born in Delleker, Plumas County on March 4, 1930 to John and Gertrude Edgar. He died on October 13, 2015 after a brief illness. Don was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 55 years, son Don Jr. and daughter-in-law Nancy, son Rick and daughter-in-law Jill, grand-children Ashley, David and Katie and great grandson Brian; his sister Joyce Howard and brother in-law Jack, his brother John, Jr and sister in-law Pat, his sister in-law Lynda Holbrook and brother in-law Doug, several beloved nieces and nephews, and countless friends and former students. Don's early school years were in Woodland, where he started high school. The family moved to Roseville in 1945 and Don graduated from Roseville Joint Union High School in 1948. As well as playing football and basketball, he was an honor student. He was a student-athlete at Placer College where he earned a football scholarship to the University of Utah, graduating in 1954. Don served in the U.S. army during the Korean War, stationed in Japan. He returned to earn a Master's Degree from Sacramento State and began his teaching and coaching at Roseville High School, and continued teaching at Sierra College where he coached football, the ski team and the golf team. Don challenged his team members to excel on the playing fields and in the classroom. In February 2009 he was inducted into the Sierra College Athletic Hall of Fame. Don enjoyed the out-of-doors and was an avid sportsman. He hunted, played golf, enjoyed archery and, most of all, loved fishing. He made fishing rods and tied flies in hopes of catching the big one. Don remained a learner throughout his life.always reading, both nonfiction and fiction, and the sports reports. He believed in hard work, commitment and never giving up and lived his life by those values. Don was deeply devoted to his family and spent many hours with Nancy along the sidelines as his children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews played sports. He was known to offer more than a few words of advice to the kids as they played. Most of all, Don was a true family man and will always be remembered by those who love him. Services to be held Tuesday October 20th at 10:00am at Lamberts Funeral Home 400 Douglas Blvd., Roseville CA. For those who wish to honor his memory, the family suggests a donation to Sierra College Foundation Wolverine Athletic Association (WAA)

As a child and lifelong friend of Donnie, I was in awe of Mr. Edgar's garage. He had everything in there under the kitchen sink. I vividly recall him often standing at his workbench, tinkering with flies, arrows, or any type of hunting and fishing accessories. He always treated me so kindly as a child, and extended that same warmth to my family members as as an adult. The Edgar family lost a great man. Marie and I extend our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to all of you.

Don took me under his wing when I was such a rookie archery instructor back in 1991 at Sierra. He always was there to order all the materials, fix the bows and arrows and provide a little organization of the archery shed. As we worked together over the years, we shared health education stories, golf tips and a few complaints. I never would have guessed him to be 61 years old when I first met him in 1991. His energy and stride was that of a man determined and purposeful in everything he did. Nancy, I send my deepest sympathy to you and your family at this time. Ashley did a wonderful speech at the service. I hope the turn out of friends and family at his service shows you how much he was loved and respected.

Mr Edgar was my chemistry teacher at RHS in the 1964-1965 school year. He was a class act and a snappy dresser. Friendly and knowledgeable. I'll never forget him. He was a blessing. My deepest condolences to his family.
