Donald Rothchild Obituary

Donald Dwane Rothchild

March 6, 1936 - September 2, 2024

Gold River, California - Don D Rothchild, 88 passed away comfortably at his home on September 2, 2024.

Don Rothchild was a well-known Sacramento area businessman in the hotel and hospitality industry. He was the General Manager/owner of the Mansion Inn from 1963 through 1984. He later served as the first General Manager overseeing preparation and opening of the Delta King as a hotel destination in Old Sacramento.

His passion for Sacramento was displayed through service in many organizations including serving as President of the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau (4 terms); Sacramento Valley Better Business Bureau (2 terms); Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sacramento; Sacramento Recovery House; Sacramento Valley Hotel Association (10 terms); and the Eleanor McClatchy Performing Arts Center. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of over a dozen organizations, including the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, and the California Hotel and Motel Association. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Sacramento and Rotary International. He was inducted into the Sacramento Jazz Festival Hall of Fame for his being instrumental in helping bring the Jazz Festival to Sacramento and supporting it through the years at his hotel.

Don enjoyed riding his cruiser motorcycle with the love of his life Jo Mary. They were involved in a number of motorcycle associations in California and Arizona. He was an avid shooter and enjoyed trapshooting. In his later years, he enjoyed Westerns and spending time with family and friends; and, of course, socializing at Costco.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ethel Rothchild; his sisters, Betty Howell and Bonnie Neep; his brothers Loren, Lary, and Garry Rothchild; his wife Jo Mary and his two daughters Deborah and Delane Rothchild.

He is survived by his son Donny Rothchild (Tanya); stepdaughter Susan Benson (Steve); stepsons David (Petra) Oaks; and Steven Oaks (Debbie); daughter-in-law, MaryLou Oaks; sister Denyce Cabrillo; sister-in-law Winzona Rothchild; nine grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and bonus family members, Fatima, Darryl and Davide Amerine.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024, at New Auburn Cemetery, 1040 Collins Drive, Auburn, CA; with a Celebration of Life to follow.
