Donna Derner Obituary

Donna Jean Derner passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 2, 2016 at the age of 76 at her home in Sun City Roseville, a community she loved filled with numerous, wonderful friends. She was raised on a small farm in Bancroft, Iowa by her parents Lawrence and Marian Bergman. She was the oldest of her siblings, Larry, Meredith and Kenny. At 16, she met the love of her life, Hank Derner, a local farm boy. They shared a loving and long-lasting marriage of 50 years. She and Hank are once again together. After marrying, they moved to California and raised their children Doug, Jennifer and Denise in Redwood City where they were active in the St. Pius community. A natural caregiver, Donna chose nursing as her profession. She worked at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City for 37 years, the last 12 years as the Director of Human Resources responsible for recruiting of nurses. She and Hank moved to Sun City Roseville 13 years ago where they shared their passion for golf. Donna continued her life-long volunteer work as a Director of The Sun City Roseville Foundation where she helped establish the Alternative Living Considerations program. She was recognized for her volunteer work last year when she received the "Placer County Senior Volunteer of the Year" award. In addition to her volunteer work, she was an avid reader and loyal sports fan of the 49ers and Giants. Nicknamed "G", Donna was actively involved with and a huge influence in the lives of each of her 7 grandchildren, Chris (27), Tim (26), Matt (20), Mark (20), Kelly (19), Mackenzie (14) and Nick (9). She spent thousands of hours supporting them at their sporting events, school activities and professions. Her children, their spouses and grandchildren were so fortunate to have enjoyed so many wonderful years and memories with her. A Celebration of Life ceremony for Donna will be held Friday, February 12, 2016 at 11 am at Timber Lodge in Sun City Roseville. In honor of Donna, donations can be made to The Sun City Roseville Foundation or First Tee.

So sadden to learn of Donna's passing. We met her at St. Clair's church. She was an amazing woman. After Hank's death we didn't see her as often but none the less thought of her. May she rest in peace. Our condolences to the family. We are fortunate to have met both of your parents. Bill and Judy Burmeister

I met Donna in 1985 when my PR firm was hired to represent Sequoia Hospital, and for years her husband Hank worked out at Dennis Nelson at lunch like I did. I worked in the press room from 1972-1985 and knew Hank well as he climbed the ranks in the Sheriff's office. Donna has was cheerful, and a terrific nurse and administrator. She will be missed.
