Doris Bierer Obituary

1921 - 2016 Army Air Corps Nurse had a Passion for Life Doris Marie Bierer was born in Lengby, Minnesota on March 20, 1921 the oldest of three girls. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 12, 2016 at the age of 94! What a Lady! As a child Doris grew up skating, fishing, boating and other wonderful things they did in the north country. Doris graduated from Fosston High School in 1939. She received her R.N. degree from Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1942. Attended Gillette "Children's Orthopedic" Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Worked at the Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Washington. She joined the Army Nurse Corps and did her Basic Training at Hammer Field in Fresno, California, where she met the love of her life, Earl (Bill) William Bierer, a dashing Army Air Corps Lieutenant on March 29, 1944. Doris had many interesting tours during her military life. Ranging from living in Tokyo International for three years to South Carolina on the East Coast to and McCord AFB on the West Coast, plus an assignment with the R.O.T.C. at the University of California at Berkeley. During her military years she was the Treasurer of the Officer's Wives Club and her favorite hobbies were cooking, oil painting and flower arranging. Doris worked as an OB/GYN nurse in Sacramento for over 20 years for Dr.'s Marvin Klein and Robert Zeff. Doris loved to play DUPLIATE BRIDGE at the Masters level, bridge tournaments, traveling, shopping, reading history; novels; biographies; etc, house boating and truly LOVED HER FAMILY. She was a very special lady who led her life by example. She loved her grandchildren and great grand- children, attending baseball games, football games; soccer games and enjoyed spending time and vacations with them all. Bill and Doris moved to Nevada City in 1978 where they designed and built their retirement home. They met many new friends and volunteered with the local Lyon's club and several other associations. Doris joined several bridge groups and became a Masters player. During this time she traveled to England, several Cruises, Carmel, Napa Valley and San Francisco. In 2002 Doris and Bill moved to Sun City Lincoln Hills Retirement Community. Unfortunately Bill passed away in February 2003 and Doris remained in Sun City and met many very special friends and neighbors for approximately 10 years. Doris is survived by her children John (Teresa) Bierer; Joanne Mathes, Ken Bailey; her 3 grandchildren Jennifer (Chris) Northart; John Jr. (Stacey) Bierer; Stacy Visger; her 6 great grandchildren Ava Northart; Stella Northart; Conner Bierer; Jayden Bierer; Kyla Visger; Hunter Visger; and sister Helen Sabin. She is preceded in death by her husband, Earl William Bierer and sister Betty Anderson. A special thank you to the staff at the Pioneer House Assisted Living in Sacramento where Doris spent her last two years. She enjoyed her time there, participating in activities and sharing stories with her care takers. Her family is extremely grateful for the exceptional care she received there. A memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2016 at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. As Doris served during WWII, she will receive full Military Honors and will be interred with her husband Colonel Retired E. W. Bierer.

On behalf of the Society of Air Force Nurses, please know we are mourning with you the death of our sister nurse, Doris Marie. It takes a patriot, willing to give of themselves to other human beings in their time of need, to step forth and join the ranks of our U. S. Air Force Nurse Corps. Your beloved one will be mourned and missed by many who served alongside her. We will include her name in our Memorial Program of the Society of Air Force Nurses in commemoration of her life and service to our nation.
