Florence HARDY Obituary

HARDY, Florence
April 4, 1925 - June 22, 2012
Resident of Davis

Florence Hardy, daughter of Carl and Margaret Strengberg, died peacefully on June 22, 2012 following a stroke and further complications. She was born April 4, 1925

She is survived by her husband Donald Grotjahn and his family, her son Roger Hardy, four grandchildren Amanda Sinclair, Matthew Hardy, Carolyn Hardy, and Christine Hardy, and six great-grandchildren (Richard, Elizabeth, Archer, Coyle, Mabel, and Peregrine). She was preceded by her brother, Stanley Strengberg, and her sister, Violet Phillipson.

Florence had a caring, gentle soul. She genuinely loved people and was very outgoing. She volunteered throughout her life, was dedicated to service, and was always very spiritual. She was always there when someone was in need. Florence was born in San Bernardino, California on April 4, 1925 and grew up with her two siblings Stanley and Violet in Santa Ana, California. In 1944 she married her first husband, Richard Hardy. She worked during World War II as an army civilian supporting the war effort in Roswell, New Mexico. After the war, they settled in Santa Ana, California where their son, Roger, was born in 1946. They then moved to Garden Grove. Florence volunteered extensively with the YWCA and led a very active and social lifestyle. After Richard retired in the early 1970s, they moved to Twin Peaks then Hemet and later Santa Rosa. She loved dogs (especially her cocker spaniel Duchess) and enjoyed playing golf. Florence lost her first husband, Richard Hardy in 1997 after almost 53 years of marriage.

She was married to her second husband, Bill Haworth, for over eight years. During this time she became active in the Friends' Church and moved to the University Retirement Community in Davis, California. She lost her second husband, Bill, in 2007.

She married her third husband, Donald Grotjahn, in 2008. It was a true love match and she called Don her soul mate. They loved going to the Woodland Opera House. Their time together was much too brief.

The family would like to thank the Yolo Hospice and the staff at the University Retirement Community for their exemplary care of Florence during her last illness.

A private family remembrance is planned. A service honoring residents passing during the year will be held at the University Retirement Community at Davis later in the year. Remembrances in Florence's name may be made to one of her favorite charities - the University Retirement Community at Davis Foundation, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Florence will be dearly missed by all those who loved her. Those who wish to sign a guestbook online may do so at www.wiscombefuneral.com
