Gerald Piering Obituary

Jerry, Dad, Papa passed away on Wednesday March 20th, 2013. Preceded in death by his parents Joseph & Margaret Piering and sister Patricia Underwood. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margie, 3 sons, Ron, Rob & Rick, daughter-in-law Lety, grandchildren Elizabeth, David, Gabriel & Carly, brother-in-law James (Linda) Banks, many nieces & nephews, best friends Bud & Jane Worley, and numerous friends he so dearly loved. Jerry was born on March 17th, 1936, in Duluth, MN and was the youngest of 4 children. He graduated from Pomona, CA H.S. in 1954 and moved to Redding, CA and attended Shasta Jr. College. From 1958-60, he served in the Navy as a pilot. He was married in 1959 and moved to Fresno, CA and enrolled in Fresno State majoring in civil engineering. In 1967, he went to work for the Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento, working for 27 years retiring in 1994. While raising his family in the Sierra/Curtis Park neighborhood, he helped build, coach and run the Curtis Park Little League. In 1976, he and his family moved to Frankfurt, Germany for 3 years, traveling extensively throughout Europe. A few years after returning to Sacramento, he helped design and build the playground at the Sierra II Center. Over the last 20 years, he and Margie spent half-a-year at their cabin in Northern Minnesota. Jerry loved to go to garage sales, tinker in his garage constantly building something and traveling, but most of all joking and laughing with many friends and family. We will miss you, never forget you and thank you for all that you provided. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, March 27th, at 11:00am, at Holy Spirit Church, 3159 Land Park Dr., Sacramento. Donations may be made to Sacramento Children's Home.

I worked with Jerry at the Corps of Engineers for many years. I am really sorry to have learned of his passing. He was a wonderful man to work with and enjoyed life. He was always considerate of others and willing to provide help when needed. Good people are always greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jerry's family and friends.

My heart grieves to hear of Jerry's passing. What a dear man! As a "neighborhood dad" he taught us all by example how to live our lives as a blessing to others. He was a shining example of what it means to be a good husband, father, neighbor, and friend. Anyone who knew him was blessed indeed.

Oh we will miss our dear friend Jerry, who to us will always remain president of the "Paradise Lake Association." We will sorely miss our grand protector of the gravel road to Paradise from our shared arch nemesis: THE PESKY ROAD GRADER! You will always be in our hearts and forever a big part of Paradise.
Love,
Keith & Angie

We will miss you Jerry and your pleasant and joyful sence of humor. Wonder if they have little cherry tomatoes in heaven. Ron and Flossie
