Harry Hogan Obituary

Harry Hogan, born in Gallipolis, Ohio 1939, died peacefully Sunday after a long illness. After a stint in the Air Force he attended Ohio State where he studied and played football during the Woody Hayes era. After relocating to Sacramento in the early '60's, Harry joined the Sacramento Police Department and had many important assignments during his impressive career. His stories were often told with the humor and easy-going manner that was part of his gregarious personality. Though a gentle man, Harry was always a big man with a big heart. As SPD's first African American Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and finally Deputy Chief, Harry's commanding presence and non-plussed demeanor solidified his role as a leader and mentor within the department. After retiring in 1985, Harry worked as a liaison for the United Nations traveling to Nigeria to help document and eventually systematize that country's police force. He also worked for the City of West Sacramento and City of Woodland as a code enforcement officer. Harry's love of life was evident in his smile and with all that knew him. He had many passions; his favorite though, was his family, friends and sailing. He often combined the two with adventures like sailing his boat with his wife Ingrid to Mexico, through the Caribbean and several self-piloted barge trips through France and Holland. Harry was also very active in the sailing community having belonged to the Stockton Sailing Club and more recently the San Pablo Yacht Club. He served on the board of directors and held the position of Vice Commodore at PSPYC. Harry will be missed and is survived by his wife Ingrid, son David, grandson Peter, daughter in-law Letty, sister Nita and nephew Roger. A celebration of Harry's life with his family and friends is scheduled for Saturday, March 2 at 3 p.m. at the Point San Pablo Yacht Club.
