Harry Martin Obituary

MARTIN, Harry

February 4, 1927 to February 17, 2008

Remembered for: Loving husband, father and grandfather; Local television personality at KCRA TV station for 33 years; Navy veteran of both WWII and the Korean War; Earned a B.A. Degree from College of the Pacific (now University of the Pacific), majoring in radio communications, and Pacific Alumni Board of Directors; Member of Rho Lamda Phi Literary Fraternity and Alpha Epsilon Rho Fraternity; Member of the Masons since 1947; Honorary Chairman of Multiple Sclerosis; Charter season ticket holder of the Sacramento Kings basketball team and named "The 6th Man" by The Kings in 2006; Inducted into San Francisco Broadcast Legends and Northern California Silver Circle; A wonderful sense of humor and by generally being a nice guy.

Preceded in death by: Wife of almost 52 years, Paulyne "Polly" (Peterson) Uhlenberg who passed away just 6 months ago in August 2007; his father, Christian George Uhlenberg and mother, Edith June Uhlenberg. Survived by: brother, Robert Uhlenberg and his wife Rose of Redwood City; daughter, Dayna Larson and her husband Stephen of Sacramento; son, Steven Uhlenberg and his wife Shari of Los Angeles; and grandchildren Erik Tinseth, Christopher Tinseth, Stephanie Tinseth, Daniel Uhlenberg and Lauryn Uhlenberg.

Born and raised in Redwood City, California, Harry, whose real name is Harry Martin Uhlenberg (he dropped Uhlenberg for show biz reasons) moved to Sacramento after graduating C.O.P. and attending the Stanford University TV Institute to pursue the new medium of television at the city's first station KCCC TV as announcer/director and children's show host Bonanza Bill. Here Harry met his future wife, Polly. They married September 11, 1955.

In 1956 Harry moved to KCRA as announcer/director and popular children's show host Captain Sacto. Each show began with a shot of Harry landing a jet and radioing to the tower "Tell all the boys and girls I'm coming in!"

After 7 years as Captain Sacto, KCRA began phasing out of kid's programming and Harry became the afternoon movie host of "Martin at the Movies."

As the station grew in its efforts to put on news and information programming, Harry became an anchorman. Soon, it became clear the public was interested in news about movies, TV and stars. The print media began covering a lot of it, but no other television station had reporters on that beat. KCRA assigned that job to Harry who was the consummate fan of movies and stars and had a terrific memory for entertainment trivia.

Harry conducted show biz interviews that even the stars enjoyed, especially after he'd surprise them with an obscure fact about them, or their work, that he simply pulled out of his proverbial hat. He was always nice and never tried to embarrass or shock the stars, and he made them laugh. His Show Biz reports were also syndicated in Phoenix and the Bay Area.

He traveled to Hollywood, Las Vegas, London, The Cannes Film Festival, and Canada. He was the first person to film the Hollywood Playboy Mansion. To name a few interviewees: Arnold Schwarzenegger; Ronald Reagan; Tom Hanks, Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, Meg Ryan, Johnnie Carson, Angie Dickenson, Bill Cosby and Tom Cruise. He interviewed close to 2,000 celebrities. He was the first person to ever interview Goldie Hawn and the last person to interview Boris Karloff.

While still at channel 3, Harry also became a movie host in Seattle at KCPO, Channel 13 with another version of "Martin at the Movies." He had other assignments at other stations as well.

Channel 3 then created the first local magazine show called 7:30, later renamed "Weeknight," with Harry as host. Betty Vasquez co-hosted with Harry for many years, and their chemistry worked well.

He retired in 1989 and spent four months every summer at his summer home on Lake Cobbosseecontee, Maine. He was an avid Kings fan and collected Kings memorabilia. He was very proud to have been named the King's honorary 6th Man in 2006.

One of his latest adventures was one of his happiest. Late in 2005, Harry and Polly celebrated 50 years of marriage by taking a week-long cruise to Mexico with their children and all 5 grandchildren.

Services for Harry's family, friends and coworkers will be held 3:00 pm, February 25th, at Andrews and Greilich, 3939 Fruitridge Road, Sacramento, CA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The March of Dimes or the Sacramento Children's Home.

I only just learned of Capt'n Sacto's passing and feel compelled to pass along my sympathies. Mr. Martin was such a genuinely nice, kind, gracious, fun, likeable individual! As Capt'n Sacto he was part of my daily routine when my sister and I lived with our grandparents.
He caught my attention at 3 and held it it throughout my childhood and well into adulthood. His reparte with co-workers like Bette Vasquez, and all of the big stars he interviewed; his easy laugh, the twinkle in his eyes, what a great human being!
I have just to shut my eyes and think about him, and he comes back to life-good natured and laughing, always laughing.
Please take comfort in the many fond memories shared by adoring fans and devoted family, alike.

Steve and Dayna,
Please accept my sympathies in the loss of your father and also the recent loss of your mother.
Having lived in Sacramento all my life, 50+ years, I always thought Harry Martin was the greatest. As a small child I loved Captain Sacto, and then there were always the movie star interviews on Channel 3. I was lucky to run in to him at a Kings game once, and he was very gracious and smiled, as I said, "Captain Sacto" when I shook his hand. Thank you for sharing your father with all of us in Sacramento.

Dear Steven & Shari Uhlenberg and Dayna & Stephen Larson and Families. I as with everyone else who has written in Harry Martin's Guest Book, grew up with Harry, as our Cartoon Host, as well as the many other TV specialities that he did as well.

My Cub Scout Troop here in Sacramento, was leaving Skipper Stu's Cartoon Show, as a particular Day of being his Guests and Harry was getting ready to start his Show, Capn'Sacto, following the "Shipper Stu" Show. He greeted all of us Cub Scouts and gave us all an Autographed Picture of him as Capn'Sacto. I've still got my Autographed Picture and it still looks like new, since it has been kept in a Photo Album all of these years, since the Mid-1950's.

Harry Martin was a wonderful person and a great Announcer and Emcee of his Productions and he will be gratefully missed by one and all.

Harry and you all have a special place in my Heart, Thoughts and Prayers. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to attend the Funeral, I would imagine that the Morturary was Packed, with those who knew Harry, as well as those of us who knew him, from his TV Days and his other TV related activities.

Peace, Blessings, Prayers and Friendship Hugs, Steve Groff

Back in the late 50s early 60's, I eagerly looked forward to getting home from school and tuning in to Capt. Sacto. At school we practiced "fall-out" drills and wore dog-tag ID's in case we ever got bombed by the Communist. As a youngster, I found it comforting to watch him fly in on that fighter jet, I was sure he was landing at McClellan AFB were my Mom, Dad and grandfather had civilian jobs. I knew they'd be safe with Capt. Sacto guarding the skies over this city! Yet he had time for the kids to fly in and show us Warner Brother cartoons. How special we felt that he would do that. I had hoped our Brownie troop would get to be on the show, but we ended up in the adjoining Skipper Stew stage, sitting on the poop-deck of the "Delta Queen"(?)with Stew Naham who also just recently passed away. We saw Harry over there and waved, and he waved back, then he disappeared, presumably to go back to flying over Sacramento and protecting us from the looming threat of war. After the cold war ended, I was so relieved that Harry Martin landed a great job at KCRA in the news and entertainment departments after he got out of the "Air Force". KCRA doesn't realize how lucky they were to have a hero in the studio! And so popular and famous he got to inteview movie and t.v. stars! What a special man he was. Through the eyes of this girl, he truly was a hero, and now as a grandma of little ones that same age, I really wish KCRA would bring back an after school hero like Capt. Sacto to give these kids a brief reprieve from the troubles all around their world. There will never be another Harry Martin, my hero. My sincerest condolences to his family, and especially the grandkids. I hope they get to access the archives and see all the shows. God Bless you all.

I, like thousands and thousands of youngsters who grew up in Sacramento with Harry Martin being a constant personality in our lives, wish to thank him. His warm smile, quick wit, gracious charm, and general interest in people of all ages was a unique gift. Bless his heart. Gods blessings to him for a life well lived and one that will be missed.

I just wanted to add my thoughts which are similar to the many that have already entered theirs. Harry was a local media legend and deservedly so. His programs and reporting meant so much to me in my years from childhood through college to my adulthood.

Last year I got see Harry for one last time, in what was maybe his last public appearance in Sacramento and at an event so befitting his identification with the community and his generosity to it: A tribute to fellow local television star of the past Bob Wilkins to benefit the fight against Alzheimer's Disease. It was delightful to see them together again, two men who had brought me countless hours of viewing enjoyment over so many years.

My heart goes out to Harry's children and family members. But I'm sure you will take heart in the knowledge that Harry will always be with us, the community he so enriched.

Harry's father Chris married my grandfather's widow (not my grandmaother) At a Pacific function we laughed together on our common far fetched relationship... He would have been my father's step brother. As part time Mainers we shared a love for the outdoors, The University of the Pacific and life. We will miss him as we have these last years since his retirement.

Here in Maine, I met Harry and Polly through relatives of mine that live in California. What a small world. I loved both of them and we always had great laughs when we got together. They will be missed greatly, but I'm so glad they weren't apart from each other for long. God Bless the family through this difficult time.

Harry Martin (as Captain Sacto) left hair ribbons behind my television in 1957 on my birthday. I will never forget the thrill of that moment. Years later, I happened to see Harry Martin in the bank and told him of his "gift" to me. He laughed and said he loves hearing those stories. Farewell, Captain Sacto! My condolences to his family.

Steve & Dayna,

My deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family.

I worked with Harry at KCRA, for many years. I started at the station in 1978, during the Weeknight heyday, and I fondly remember his sense of humor, he quite a character. He was always very kind to me, and even in the years after he left KCRA, anytime he came by the station, we would joke together about how most of the people at the station now, didn’t have any idea who he was, because they weren’t even born by the time he retired. I will always treasure my memories of your father, and remember his ready smile.

You will be in my heart and prayers, especially during this time of grief.

Dayna and Steve,
I was saddened to hear of the passing of your father. As a native of Sacramento, fellow CKM grad, and former intern at KCRA, I was fortunate to see much of his great work over the years. He was such a special man and brought happiness and joy to so many people. He was truly one of a kind, and will be greatly missed. I will always remember his wonderful laugh.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Sincerely,

Just a note, my first recollection of Harry Martin was when I was a boy about 7 years old. I saw Harry on the old channel 40 station on the Garden Hwy. His first job was as Bonanza Bill, He would come riding down the Garden Hwy in his old military Jeep. This sticks out in my memory, because that was the first show I ever saw on the television. I had the pleasure of meeting Harry many years later while I was in High School at the KCRA station. Same friendly person in person as on the TV. My condolences to the family.

I would like to add my voice to the chorus of fans who will miss "Captain Sacto". I lived most of my 50+ years in Sacramento and, having a dad who was always off on a tour of duty for the Air Force, I saw more of Harry Martin than I did my own dad! Thanks for the great memories!
